Holistic Strength Training For Triathlon
L**S
A comprehensive strength training program for general health as well as triathlon
This book makes me wish I had the time to do everything that's good for me. (I don't even have time to do everything that's bad for me, and that seems easier to work into the day.) Andrew Johnston provides a wealth of information that explains the philosophy behind his training program, as well as the training program itself. While so many programs focus on "get'er done", he builds a foundation that includes flexibility and stability to not only be fit and perform well as an athlete, but to stay healthy. He has the background to give him the cred to write this book: former pro cyclist turned triathlete and coach trainer with awards out the wazoo on all counts; Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist degree; and Corrective Holistic Exercise Kinesiologist. My wish list would include a DVD to accompany the book--but perhaps Johnston has a few other things on his schedule that prevent him from doing everything that would be good for me. ;-) He does advise in his own review not to get the Kindle version, which he didn't authorize and apparently doesn't play well. You can get the PDF version on his website. A leukemia survivor who gives back, a portion of all sales for this book go to the Lymphoma & Leukemia Society.

Great info, BUT very hard to use (missing page #s)
Based on my 20 years in triathlon and my education as a personal trainer/certified triathlon coach, I think the information in the book is solid - worthy of 4 stars, at least. The 3 star review is about the book formatting. There are gaps in the page #s (at least one of 7 pages). This makes it hard to reference... not that the author ever uses page notes, which is a huge oversight. The exercises are spread throughout the book (though mostly contained in a single section) so it takes an obnoxious amount of time to flip through and find any specific one. It almost makes the book unusable, in my opinion.

I am a specialist in high-performance strength and conditioning and I LOVE THIS BOOK!
As a specialist in training athletes for triathlons, ultra-marathons as well as Martial Arts, I find this is one great book! I also buy it as a present for my clients who train for endurance and they like it. They can understand it and apply it.The CHEK system which Andrew applies is known to me and so is the methodology based on Tudor Bompa's work. Simple, scientific, effective!Highly recommended for all those who want performance as an extension of health!

Very informative for all fitness levels
Tho a triathlon is not on my calendar any time soon, I was curious about the holistic approach to training - for any sport. As a Personal Trainer, conditioning exercises have become more important to my workouts & client training method to prevent injury. Exercises featured in this book is great for balance, coordination and correcting strength imbalances -It's not a speedy reading material by far, I've used several of the techniques & noticing improvements in strength/poundage at the gym.

Andrew does a great job with detail as well as making it easy ...
This book is a Bible-not only for strength training but all around health and nutrition. Andrew does a great job with detail as well as making it easy to follow and understand. It is a great resource not only to understand how the body works but to learn ways to become stronger, and faster and prevent injuries. I highly recommend-and have to many friends!

Should be part of every triathlete's program
This book should be in every triathlete's library. The author is inspirational and book truly informative. As an older triathlete many of my niggles could have been minimized or avoided if I had a book like this when I first began triathlons in early 80's. Many triathletes tend to get fit but muscle imbalances will eventually lead to injuries. Andrew's rx is well thought out and thorough and will lead to better performances and enjoyment of the sport.

A Game Changer
This book was a complete changer for me. I bought a copy during my second season of triathlon, and it really helped dig me out of some chronic hip and IT band issues, as well a build a great base of functional strength. Highly recommend.

Fantastic resource. As a certified athletic trainer
Fantastic resource. As a certified athletic trainer, this book has helped not only myself, but I've also used it with the athletes that I care for. It's plainly written which is something I like because I like that the author is speaking from the heart as well as his wealth of knowledge. This book is for you, whether you are serious about staying in one piece while trying to train for big events on a consistent basis or just trying to turn your health around.

Awesome book
Being a triathlon coach myself this book really covers all aspects of triathlon especially the ones that get neglected by others. If you apply the aspects mentioned in this book not only will your triathlon times improve but also your health and happiness as well
