Used this to repair a 70 yo lamp with separate nightlight. Single twist switch separately controls upper main light and lower night light. One turn nightlight on; next turn: lamp light on; next turn: both lights on, next turn: both lights off. Works like new.

If you have a lamp with a night light in the base...this is what you need. One click is bottom light only, two is top, three is both, four is off. Super easy to install, only a screwdriver was needed.

This switch replaced the original on a 50-year-old ginger jar lamp, which held the main 60-watt bulb on top under the lamp shade, with a 40-watt bulb inside the ginger jar itself. This switch appears to be nearly identical to the original, perhaps a slightly updated version, which works perfectly.You don't want a three-way switch, but rather a two-circuit type switch such as this whereby the switch settings are: 1) top bulb on, 2) bottom bulb on, 3) both bulbs on, 4) both bulbs off.My lamp had a brown cord from the wall plug to the socket/switch, and a black cord from the socket inside the ginger jar to the socket/switch. Each of these cords has two wires inside: one neutral (the grooved/ribbed wire), and one positive (the smooth wire).When replacing a switch of this type it is important to note the relationship of the existing wires to the three screw terminals on the old switch before you unscrew/disconnect them. The two wires from each cord with a grooved/ribbed texture are neutral, and both need to be screwed together to the center screw, whereby the smooth wires from each cord are positive, with one screwed separately to each side of the switch.If you're unsure of what you're doing, consult an electrician or watch some videos on YouTube on how to properly wire a switch.This switch is highly recommended.

My original switch failed my on my leg lamp. Purchased this and was able to fix it in minutes. At the time of my install black went to the gold screw, white to silver and red to black screw. Thankful this product let my Christmas tradition continue for years to come!

I bought two of these sockets to replace original that was working intermittently and to have a spare. First one assembled okay but when I turned it on, the switch mechanism felt sloppy and had the same symptoms as the original. Replaced it again with the spare which had much tighter operation and works much better.

Reduced a star for no instructions. I highly recommend this socket so much so buy a couple when you purchase.One if you hook the thing up incorrectly and second for a spare. Mine came with no instructions so can't help there. Reviews on here are spot on but like anything found done that helped me. I'm know just enough about electricity to hurt myself. First time I tried to hook it up first turn bottom light came on, second turn top light came on bottom off, third turn nothing, fourth turn off. Lights flickered a little when on. After little research found my problem. Wires have a smooth side and ribbed side. Who would have known? My old lamp was wired with white and brown wire. White used to plug into wall, brown from bottom night light. Here is what worked for me. Smooth white wire to brass screw, ribbed white wire to silver/nickle screw. The bottom brown smooth wire also attached to silver/nickle screw now consisting of one white and one brown wire. Last brown ribbed wire to black screw. Wholla!! works perfectly. First turn bottom light comes on, second turn bottom off top on, third turn both bottom and top on, fourth turn off. Hope this may help someone having same issues.
