Wonderful explanations
As these were written as an instructional series, I will review them together (Bidding, Play of the Hand, and Defense). As a beginner bridge learners, my husband and I started with these three. They are well written, easily followed and quite instructive. I especially enjoyed the first two, but got bogged down by the third (Defense) and couldn't finish it (a rare thing for me). I wonder if it would be better read after much more practice and playing of the game to pull the quite detailed explanations together. I would have also liked it if each had a well-organized index in the back to allow one to find concepts more easily in these reference books. The back appendix is a definition of terms, but there is no organization of the concepts and we found ourselves having to work hard to locate for review parts that were relevant with our play. Nonetheless, the authors are clearly good instructors and I'd recommend these to new players.

Well worth the cost
An excellent update of the ACBL/Audrey Grant book. Betty Starzec did a fine job bringing the text up to date. I would compare it favorably to Watson.Three things potential buyers might keep in mind.1. Try to get the ACBL programs "learn to play bridge" and "learn to play bridge 2". I believe they are free and would make great companions to the text.2. Even though the title and main subject is 'play of the hand', bidding and even defense are also covered. If you see this a helpful extra, good. If you see it as a distraction.....3. There are 'sample deals' that at appear to require you buy a special deck of cards made for the book, but this is not necessary. These books are clearly used by bridge teachers and in a class setting the cards would be helpful, but as a stand alone book the cards are not necessary.I have purchased the Bidding, Play and Defense titles and found them all very well written and informative for a beginner/advanced beginner.

Well written and very useful
This is the second book of a series that are well written and have a logical way to learn bridge for a beginner. Many seasoned players have also borrowed my book and learned all sort of things that they thought they knew. I highly recommend this series for the new as well as the intermediate player.

Excellent Bridge Book!
I love this series!!!! I've already read and studied "Defence". The books are obviously written by a good teacher because they are easy to understand and, even better, after each chapter there are example exercises with the corrections.

Clear and logical
An excellent book on how to play a hand in bridge once the bidding ends.If you use ACOL the book is still an excellent guide, you'll just have to skip over about 20% of the questions which relate to standard american bidding.

Play of the Hand in the 21st Century, The Dialmond Series
This book makes an excellent text book. I used it to teach a class of adult students how to play a hand of Bridge. It complements the first book in the series (Biding in the 21st Century) very well. I intend to use it again in the future.

Great Books !!
I only recently purchased several of the ACBL series books and have not read the Play of the Hand yet. However, I am very confident it will be as excellent as Bidding, Defence, and 2/1 Game Force. These books have been so helpful. I wish I had discovered them long ago !!
