Are these lead-free? And are they tempered glass - or will it shatter in a thousand shards if dropped?

There is no mention of the glass bowls containing lead. The box states they are made of durable tempered glass with BOA/BPS-free, leak resistant lids. I will say these are very high quality bowls, I am very satisfied with them. I use them to store my wife’s puréed meals.

What is the flap for on the onsode of the lid?

It's unclear. I use it to vent the steam when I put is in my microwave oven. The lid seems ok.
