Review Publishers Weekly   “Powerful. A heartbreaking and inspirational account of personal triumph.” New York Daily News “A tale worth telling. . . . It picks up where Anne Frank’s diary ends.”Jewish Telegraph "High on the list of Holocaust reading." Michael Berenbaum — director of Sigi Ziering Institute, American Jewish University "Eva's story is a powerful memoir of a young Austrian girl whose family found refuge — or so they thought — in Holland during World War II. Like their more famous neighbors, the Franks, Eva's family also went into hiding, though the Schloss family separated, father and son, mother and daughter. Betrayed, they were captured separately and sent to Birkenau, where they lived throughout 1944. Mother and daughter endured all that one endured in Auschwitz. But Eva's story includes the help that was given to them by fellow prisoners and the sheer luck that it took to survive. It is a poignant story so very well told and all the more interesting to readers as Eva's story intersects with Anne Frank. The girls played together as children, and after the war Eva's mother married Otto Frank. Having both lost spouses and children, they found each other and could remember the past together as they faced the future." Natural Style, Must Read
I recently went to a lecture by Eva Schloss and when it was over I had more questions about her experiences that weren't answered during the short presentation so ordering this book was a no brainer. Obviously, it's a first person account (by Eva as well as a few chapters by her mother) of history which is essential for posterity. There's a lot of important information in here regarding her particular story as well as universally on the process in which things happened which is useful in understanding how this could happen and the evolution that allowed it to happen. That all aside, I am mainly writing this to alert readers to the fact that this book is not written by a professional writer. This is a book written by a person who experienced and survived an exceptional event in history. It is not polished at all. This goes both ways, if you just finished another book by a professional author and start this one, you will grind gears for a minute getting used to this very natural style. I don't mean this as a criticism, it's just to alert people of what to expect since it took me a minute to get into the flow of the book. It actually makes the book more confessional and relatable to any reader since she makes no effort to present convoluted information or talk over anyone's head. This book would be appropriate for any level of reader which is great considering the material. It also includes photos and maps which helps make the story so poignant. I'm very glad I ordered and read it. As a bonus, I ordered a used book and the one that arrived was signed by the author which was awesome and unexpected.

A must read Holocaust story
Eva tells the complete story - from her early life, to living in hiding from Nazi regime in Holland, to the deportation of her family to the concentration camp. Eva gives complete details of the events that transpired while in Birkenau and walks the reader through the liberation and long journey back home. Headlines at the beginning of the chapters keep the reader informed of the month and year and important events happening in the war. Although it is noted that Eva is the stepsister of Anne Frank, do not expect a lot of detail about Anne in this book, as she does not have a strong connection with Eva or her family in the beginning. This book haunted me for days. I would rank this as one of the must read books regarding the Holocaust.

Thank you Eva
I had my 15 year old daughter read the diary of Anne Frank and it brought her to a greater understanding of reality that is the human condition. But we then read this book. The value we received out of both books was immense. I would suggest that you read this book after reading the diary of Anne Frank or at least after seeing the play or movie. I would also say do not lose the opportunity to read this book after the diary of Anne Frank. This is the book that completes story that everyone should know. I wish it was attached to the diary of Anne Frank as a two-part series. It is a shame it is not. It offers the same important message at this are you in Frank yet seen from an even deeper level. This book is as important for an understanding of the human condition -- not just man's inhumanity to man -- but also courage bravery perseverance strength. In my opinion it is a must read.

Emotional, personal and compelling account by the step sister of Anne Frank
Compelling story of a young girl who witnesses the indescribable and yet has the fortitude to maintain her integrity and love for others. The author tells of an episode that took place upon liberation where Russian soldiers mercilessly beat a Nazi and she then attempts to stop them! Eva's story is raw, personal, moving and incredibly inspirational.

Each Decision is Important to Survivors
I received this book; third I have read from personal stories of the Holocaust. This one from a young girl. Also detailed family members stories. Best because she had her Mom almost the entire sad story. Many talents and good people. I would recommend this book to others and will pass mine to another.
