Greedy Princess / The Rabbit and the Tiger (Korean Folk Tales for Children)
B**.
Two Korean trickster tales
Two bilingual Korean folk tales/fairy tales told in English and Korean. In the first story, a mother leaves three treasures to her three sons, but the boys first scoff at the gifts for they seem shabby and worthless. There's a blue marble, an old flute, and a worn vest. Their mother tells them the gifts are all magical and warns her sons to keep them a secret. However, the young men blab about them all over, and soon a greedy princess has designs to get her hands on them. She manages to get the first and second gifts, but the third son uses his gift to outwit the princess and get back his brothers and their treasures. In the second story, a clever rabbit uses his quick thinking to outwit a not so clever hungry tiger. It almost looks like they had children illustrate these tales. I have no idea whether that is true or not. The illustrations are ok, but not amazing. The tales in this volume could both be classified trickster tales. The first story bears some resemblance to the Badger & the Fan folk tale from Japan and also Pinocchio with the whole long nose business. This would be good for kids learning either Korean or English since it is told in both languages.
