Really makes you think
I was hoping that there would be a new version, but the things we don't know, as described in the original version, are still deep mysteries. I remember Dr. Wigglesworth, from reading this a long time ago. I think he was talking about where wiggly animals come from, but that is from memory, and it might have been quarks or something.

Great book
Love this book. I first purchased it when I was a teenager and was fascinated by it. I lost it over the years and was pleased to find it available.

This book is now outdated and is not an encyclopedia. Difficult book to understand.
It is not what the title indicates and is not accessible to a lay reader.

What we don't know about the universe.
This book was written in the 70's by the experts in their particular scientific disciplines (Nobel laureates, among them). It discusses in technical but readable detail what we DON'T know about the universe (at lease what we didn't know then). Good reference.

Dated in technicalities but not in spirit, a mind-bender
This book had a great influence on me when I was growing up. The copyright is 1979, and many of the scientific details are now outdated. The book is a collection of technical/scientific papers on what is UNKNOWN. The papers were written by prominent researchers in the physical and life sciences. Some of the problems are so difficult, however, that not that much progress has been made in 20 plus years. What would be really nice would be to see this kind of book redone today. The first chapters are more philosophical, then are followed by mind-bending papers, in clear English but with challenging concepts and some math, by P.C.W. Davies, Roger Penrose, et al. This was where I first learned that no theory of quantum gravity has been developed, where I was introduced to Mach's principle, the "coincidental large numbers" linking cosmology to particle physics, etc.

This is a great book, but it is about time (almost 40 years!) that an updated version was published. The book covers broad areas of Science and asks leading thinkers what we don’t know, but they want to know.
