Q: is it really mold that folks are talking about or the natural aesthetic of smoked palm leaves compressed? If it is mold, is there an expiration date?

No. The palm leaves have natural markings which include wood grain like brown streaks and sometimes black dots. We try our best to remove the leaves with excessive black dots, simply for the reason that they are mistakenly seen as mold. The way to confirm they are not is by touching the markings on the plates with a napkin and they will be dry (if they were not markings, they would be wet to the touch and spread like an ink). As long as they are sealed in the original packaging and stored in a cool/dark place, they will last for at least 1 year before they start to biodegrade. They will be in excellent condition for 60-90 days after the packaging has been opened. We are committed to providing the highest quality palm leaf plates. Thank you.

Q: How large is the flat portion of these plates? Will a 9x9 cake fit completely on the flat area?

This is a 6 inch x 6 inch palm leaf plate so it won't fit a 9x9 cake. The 10 inch square palm plate is the best size for your party.
