Beautiful illustrations
While these are not the pictures I grew up with, they are goregous. Got this for my nephew who is really into the Lord of the Rings. He's always asking questions about different people and I thought this would be a great way to familiarize himself with Tolkein's world.

A guide to the peoples and places of middle-earth - a must have
A great book. Every Lord Of The Rings fan should have it. I'm not much on rating the things i buy, but this book is a must have.

Simple and childish
Much too young for the person I intended it for, although he had asked for it I believe he was disappointed.

A great way to encounter the people and places of Middle-Earth
With the upcoming movie The Hobbit soon to be release in theaters and reading the book with my kids, how can I not review a book that present the peoples and places of Middle-Earth? Though it is an unofficial and unauthorized guide to Tolkien's Middle-Earth, I think it is worth checking it out.As soon as you open this hard cover book, you will contemplate the face of Gandalf staring at you or Gollum surprised by your arrival in the pages. The book is divided in three sections; the free peoples, the enemy, and legends and lore of Middle-Earth. Once the book is cracked open, I think it will be hard to put down if you like the stories of The Hobbit and it sequel The Lord of the Rings. Each section will present the people and places found in the pages of the book of Tolkien. Accompanied by fabulous drawings and sketches, the text will give you information about everything you can imagine from Middle-Earth. As you turn the pages, you will definitively be fascinated with the Mithril vest, the tools and weapons they carry in their quests, the rings, the orcs and much more. Flipping and reading through the book, I am transported toward Middle-Earth and recognized the storyline of the movies of The Lord of the Rings. I am also able to learn more about the characters and the story as I explore this book. This book is fabulous in the way of you can learn more about the people and the places in Middle-Earth. It could be a great book to introduce your kids to the books and/or the movies. And if you have a fan of Tolkien's works in your life, he/she might find this book very interesting.

Beautiful but flawed
While the drawings are a nice, new interpretation of the characters in the book, the text is filled with mistakes. I got the impression that the author was not a fan, but had read the Cliff Notes. Many very simple facts were misstated. Some of the pictures were impossible for me to fit into the storyline.I do not own this book, I saw it in the local library yesterday and read the whole thing in about 20 minutes. I would not waste any money on this book.
