Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna [DVD]

A beautiful swan song for the original digidestined
Spoilers ahead."You cannot alter your fate, but you can rise to meet it if you choose." - Wise woman of the Amishi.Yes I am making a favorable comparison of this movie to a Miozaki film, because last evolution is a good story for the same reason that princess mononoke is a good story. Early in the film Tai and Matt learn that as they grow up their digivices will cease to function and that their digimon will disappear when that happens, and it will eventually happen to all of the digidestined. Further using them to digivolve will accelerate the process. This is explained by a former digidestined who this has already happened to. This woman turns out to be the antagonist. She has constructed, within the digital world, a space where the digidestined are locked in childhood with their Digimon so that they never have to experience the pain of having their digivice cease functioning. A safe space if you will. During the protracted final confrontation of the film Matt and Tai have to repeatedly choose to sacrifice remaining time with their digimon to try and save the digidestined who have already entered the safe space. The climactic moment of the battle comes when the brain washed digidestined join the fight against Matt and Tai, and in a last act of defiance Tai grabs the whistle around child Kari's neck and blows it, in a call back the moment in the first digimon movie where Tai and Kari were helpless children and the only thing Tai could do was blow the whistle. This snaps the the other digidestined out of the safe space and returns them to their adolescent ages.It is then that the tide of the battle turns. Choosing this moment is genius as it reveals the true effects of the antagonist's actions. She isn't protecting the digidestined from pain, but rather infantilizing them and leaving them perpetually helpless, just as Tai and Kari were helpless the first time they encountered Digimon. This moment mirrors another trait of the safespace in that it must be rejected by those it claims to help.Returning to the princess mononoke comparison. What if Ashitaka had decided to spent his last days among his loved ones while the boar mark spread and killed him? That would be an understandable choice, however it would make for a depressing and worse, boring story. If Matt and Tai had at any time deciding to just spend as much time with their Digimon is possible, they couldn't be faulted for it, but the story would have been depressing and boring. The takeaway from both stories is that hardship and pain await everyone, but it must forthrightly confronted rather than shrunken away from, and that those who seek shelter from that reality are at best passive observers of their own fate and at worst well meaning villains conspiring with the naive to keep them helpless children.

Be prepared to shed tears
As someone who grew up watching Digimon and recently watched the 6 movie Tri Adventures, this was a must buy for me. I heard it was the finale to the original digidestines and I'd be upset with myself if I didn't see it through. I went into this movie with no expectations. I read no reviews, no spoilers and honestly didn't know it even existed before November 28, 2020. That's the day I brought it after finishing Digimon Adventure Tri: Future. The credits weren't even done by the time I hit purchase on this movie.OK, now to review the movie. The beginning felt a little empty to me. I felt like they could have done more and I wish they would have shown the Adventure 02 cast battling more. Or even anyone besides Matt and Tai. I know they're the best at what they do but it felt like everyone was set aside like they didn't matter. Also, feels like they retcon the main factor in this movie. Adventure 02 kinda proved the opposite of this. That's my only cons to this movie and the pros vastly out way them.I love the lore and concept of digimon, maybe more than pokemon at this point. I've grown very attached to the first 2 sets of digidestines and their digimon. That's probably why this movie hit so hard at the end. I knew it was coming, everything about this movie screams it but man, I couldn't stop the tears from coming. It was like a close friend moving away and not being able to see or talk to them again. My heart hurts just writing this review. If you're like me and loved Digimon adventures and Digimon Adventures 02, this movie is for you. It's a great nostalgic trip down memory lane that ends with tears and the realization that, this movie is really about us growing up and letting go of those things that made us children. No matter how hard it is to do.

An amazing addition to the original Digimon Adventure
This movie made me weep like a little kid. It's an amazing addition to the original Digimon Adventure that I grew up. Took 1 star off because even though they include the original Japanese audio, there is only 1 set of English captions for the English dub. So essentially if you like to watch subbed anime, this specific Blu-Ray will leave you disappointed.

What an epic movie that follows the first digi-destined into adulthood.

good ending for franchise
liked this movie for many reasons but i'm gonna talk about what i expected for a final chapter movie. As always when we have a closing a chapter movie/episode i feel that the directors don't go epic enough. this movie should of had all the digi destine from the first 3 seasons come together for one epic battle with the Ty and Matt doing some type of digivolution that we never seen before. over-all the movie was good and nice closing to the original.

A long time coming, but very worth it!
I had really hoped to see this film in theaters back in March, but sadly COVID put a stop to that. I pre-ordered this a while back and it was a wonderful surprise to find it arrived in the mail today. I have to say: after a long wait, it was everything I’d hoped for. It blends Digimon Adventure 01 and 02 pretty seamlessly and it’s jump-on friendly so no worries if you haven’t seen Digimon Adventure Tri. A nostalgic, heartfelt ending to a series I’ve adored for as long as it’s been around.

Won’t work in the UK.
Bought this from the UK Amazon site. Doesn’t tell you what region the DVD plays in on here before you buy and unfortunately it’s region 1 so it won’t work. Unless you have a region free DVD player don’t buy. Disappointed is an understatement as there’s no mention of a UK release date for this film.UPDATE: I have now got a DVD player that is region free so I have managed to watch it. The film is good but can only rate the seller 3 stars due to the issue of lack of information about what region the dvd will work in.

No region details
So there isn't a way to see the region and as i look i thought yes this is the english dub and bought it thinking it was gonna work turns out no. This is region 1 for anyone who doesn't understand for uk (were am at) we need it to be region 2 for it to be playable on many DVD players sold here region 1 is for the USA & Canada and bit more north of Canada not sure if its still Canada up there so sorry if i have offended any canadas reading don't know all the world please forgive me.Luckly i did find a way to play this DVD i had to get a region unlocker app from the windows 10 store "DVD Region+CSS" only then i could watch the movie and i am so glad i got to. It was a great movie and still feel bit sad thinking about them endings. very well done moive shame it caused me some problems due to the lack of info.

No spoilers
This was super emotional but I honestly think it was the perfect ending to the show. I’ve been following the original Digimon Adventure since it first aired so it was super touching.Tri was a little disappointing in my opinion, but this right here- this is everything Tri needed to be.Also let us please appreciate they got the original animators back on board and the original digivolution sequences have been reinstated. Honestly it’s beautiful- everything a Digimon fan could want in a follow up from the original series. Plus we finally get to see the 02 kids after all that teasing min Tri which never really led anywhere!
