The Fearless Hyena (Limited Edition)

Fun for what it is!
The Fearless Hyena is a Hong Kong movie written and directed by Jackie Chan. The film was originally produced by the Goodyear Movie Company and released in 1979 as a Lung Cheung Company Limited product. The film is around an hour and forty minutes long and tells a fairly ordinary kung fu story about a youngster Shing Lung (Jackie Chan) who doesn't take his training seriously. In order to make some money, he takes a job as a kung fu teacher with a group of no good gamblers. The build up of cockiness leads to problems with a fairly threatening bad guy. Lung swears revenge and ups his game, resulting in another fantastic end sequence by the film legend. As far as Jackie Chan movies go, I thought that The Fearless Hyena finely crafted and had a lot of love put into it. But it lacks a decent plot and felt like a by the numbers kung fu movie. There's the usual Jackie Chan slapstick humour and a few impressive stunts and action sequences. It's pretty much everything we have come to expect of a Jackie Chan movie but doesn't quite hit the heights of Jackie at his peak. This collection from 88 Films looks really nice. It's got a really nice sharp image and retains plenty of colour. It has a very consistent image through out. There are only very minor problems, so minor that you likely won't notice unless you're looking for it. The extras are also very bare bones. There's the usual selection of audio tracks and a couple of extra videos, but nothing worth writing home about.I wouldn't go out of your way to see this one. But I would recommend it for completionists. This is far from Jackie Chan's worst and is an easily enjoyable film. It's clear that they put effort into it, it's just not as good as the films that followed. Definitely pick this up, but only once you have acquired the more famous films like Drunken Master, Police Story etc.

Traces of brilliance
The Qing Dynasty has sent deadly assassins to eliminate the members of a martial-arts school which opposed them and have now gone into hiding. Chief among these is Jackie's grandfather and the mysterious "Unicorn".Although his grandfather is teaching Jackie the secrets of his school, he forbids him to fight and insists he gets a job to support them. After failing to find employment, he is persuaded by the leader of a bogus martial-arts school to use his skill to fight all-comers for money and so boost their reputation. However, Jackie's decision to re-name the school after his grandfather's style of Kung Fu leads to tragedy. The assassins track down his grandfather and kill him and Jackie's life is only saved by the arrival of the "Unicorn". Naturally, Jackie swears vengeance and the "Unicorn" teaches him "Emotional Kung Fu" in preperation for the final showdown with the Qing Assassins. This is the first time that Jackie wrote and directed and, even at this early stage of his career, his typical style and hall-marks are apparent. Although the film is a bit formulaic, there's plenty of visual and object-oriented slapstick comedy as Jackie defeats challengers in a variety of disguises before the inevitable face off.The restoration isn't too bad, although the sound quality is a little variable at times and it certainly would have been better with the original soundtrack and subtitles rather that dubbed. Nevertheless, it's an enjoyable early film and shows the great potential of one of the finest actors of his generation.
