Brilliant - but harrowing
This film is based on a true account of the sinking of the ship William Brown in 1841, where Alexander Holmes, the senior naval officer commanding the overcrowded lifeboat had to decide which of the survivors lived and who died. Later tried for murder, Holmes was convicted of manslaughter and was sentenced to 6 months’ imprisonment. To bring matters up to date, a book was written by Richard Sale, who also directed this film. A liner is struck by a floating mine, the ship goes down and 27 male and female survivors are packed into (and around) a lifeboat which should only accommodate nine – and only has provisions and water for that number. After the captain dies of his injuries, Executive Officer Alec Holmes takes charge. Others also die but since the lifeboat is 1,500 miles off the coast of Africa and no distress signal was sent, Holmes has to make the unenviable decision of who’s going to remain on board – and if they’re going to row all the way to Africa, the answer is – ‘Only the strongest’.Alec Holmes is played by Tyrone Power, who provides a tremendous performance and he leads a terrifically talented cast, so good that it would be invidious to single one or another out for special mention. There are no laughs to be had in this impressive, albeit disturbing drama although those viewers with a black sense of humour will relish the exchange between Holmes and Major General Barrington (Clive Morton) regarding the dog on board. It’s not a spoiler to mention that Holmes and at least some of the survivors are saved (if Holmes did in 1841, so must his namesake, 116 years later) and it’s also clear that their salvation is only due to Holmes’ sheer bloody-mindedness; but human nature being what it is, all save two of them turn on him to denounce him. The question left for the viewers is, ‘What would I do in Holmes’ circumstances?’ A tough one, that.A brilliantly acted, photographed and directed film – but nevertheless, a harrowing one.

Necessary Sacrifices
Grim 1957 thriller about the sinking of a luxury cruise liner in the Atlantic that leaves 27 survivors in a lifeboat built for 9, with a major storm approaching. Executive Officer Tyrone Power realizes that the weakest will have to be 'passed over the side', i.e. thrown overboard, if anyone is to survive.Although a little slow moving and melodramatic at times, the harsh realities of survival and the implications of responsibility of command are authentically developed and portrayed.Loosely based on a real incident (the sinking of the William Brown in 1841) Seven Waves Away (AKA Abandon Ship!), is well worth watching for its unusual, powerful and honest theme.Remade in 1975 as a very good TV movie, The Last Survivors, with Martin Sheen.
