Before you give up on self help for depression, try this
This is pretty much the original definitive self-help book for anyone suffering from depression and feeling ready to start climbing out through use of refocusing, reframing, challenging old beliefs and thought patterns, and taking control and ownership of the actions required to feel better. Thousands of books have replicated this book in style, tone and content, but none have ever bettered the presentation and sheer volume of information available here.Originally published in 1980, but since updated, the guidance and advice in the book is thorough, engaging, and direct. It clearly demonstrates how to help the reader rationalise their experiences and feelings, and move on to where they want to be in life. The sections on the physical side of depression and realities of pharmacological treatment are the most honest, and therefore genuinely helpful, I've ever read. The book is friendly in tone, but practical and clinical. It's not warm and fuzzy. There's no faux chumminess. It's more like spending time with an experienced psychiatrist who's interested in getting results for you, and supporting you on your journey, but isn't about to be your Facebook friend. The book is American, but the only indications of this are the spellings, the help is applicable to all and the book isn't US-centric in any way.The book does recommend following the companion Feeling Good Handbook. Personally I felt the Handbook was just a cash-in. It repeated the same information as the original book, along with additional exercises. I consider that money wasted and it left a bit of a bad taste after finding this original book so helpful.

An amazing book on depression
I've been suffering from depression for, God knows, how many long years. As soon as I started reading this book I immediately felt a great relief as if it was written specifically for me! I have read other books written by Dr. David Burns and have found them extremely useful but "Feeling Good: The New Method Therapy" has really hit the nail on the head. I think every depressed person can immediately identify himself with one of the patients described in this book and benefit from the solutions offered for his/her cure. It's amazing how effective Dr. Burns way-outs are and how simple it is to put them into action. I just feel much better one day after reading this book and thank heartily its author for having donated me a new way of seeing things to enjoy my life once again. God bless Dr. David Burns for being so wonderful.

Readable
Readable but long winded.A concise version of this book,Get YOURSELF into the habit of painting pictures in your mind’s eye of how you really want to be.Fantasize about YOU being confident, happy, prosperous, wealthy, sociable ,,,,,, etcThe more you do this, the more you generate good feelings, the more your subconscious mind take notice, the more your subconscious makes YOU act like that.Habits, mental or physical, take 90 days to form ….. GET BUSY!!Think failure to achieve failure, think SUCCESS to achieve SUCCESS!You get more of what you focus on.An exampleIn a book by a world famous hypnotist, he tells of an experiment conducted with a group of manic depressives. Their task was to collect photos of any happy times in their life and stick them to surfaces such a fridge doors along with smiley face pictures. They had to have them all over the home and in the work place if allowed. Each time one of these depressives looked at a ‘happy time photo’ or smiley face picture, they had to force themselves to picture a happy situation in their mind so to allow good feelings. The experiment was a three month period. When assessed after the three months, it was found that the brains of those in experiment had been “rewired” and total contrast to the former manic depressive state they’d been in. They were now happy and had an optimistic outlook on life.
