Great on smooth granite.
This adheres very well to our granite countertop next to our toilet. We use it there when my husband's back is hurting. It does come loose after a while so every few days we take it off, clean the area and re fasten it. It doesn't adhere as well to our ceramic tile, so I wouldn't trust it in a shower. If your tile is very smooth (no texture at all) and a high gloss it might work well.

Bought for my mom - works great
I bought 3 types of grab bars for my 88 year old mother to assist her in and out of the tub. By far this was the one she liked best. It grabs and the bar is not too thick for her hand. Also, she finds it easy to reset the clamps before she uses it - which is important because she has lost a lot of hand strength. It is important for anyone using suction bars to know they are not for weight bearing but for balance assistance. For that purpose, this one is perfect.

Rusted metal under levers
I purchased this on Amazon in February 2010 and began using it immediately in a stall (no tub) shower that my elderly mother uses. The shower has 6-inch smooth tiles laid diagonally, so the bar installed horizontally centered perfectly between two tiles, about 4-foot off the floor. It held beautifully - really strong. However, today I checked it and one of the grips was loose, although the other was still tight, and it was only slightly sagging. To my surprise, when I lifted the levers and removed the bar, the metal parts under the levers were very rusted and I could not even get them to move to try to re-install the bar. I found the product brochure and it says, "For best results, remove after each use and store in a cool, dark place with levers disengaged." What? I'm supposed to take it down after each shower???I've used some of the cheaper grab-bars ($15-dollar range) and the springs do get rusty after awhile, but I don't mind having to replace them after a couple of years. It seems that this more expensive product should not contain parts that rust, rendering them useless.

Works great
The item has suctioned very strongly and has helped a lot inside the shower with an unstable/aging parent. We do always test it's sturdiness/suction before each use because once or twice in the middle of the night it has lost suction and fallen down. Maybe because water got behind it? This hasn't caused concern to us while using though because with all our strength we can't pull it loose otherwise.

A great buy! Although bulky
I have used other cheaper bars that were not at all secure. After seeing the reviews, I decided to try this one and got it for travel. A great buy! Although bulky, it did the job, and I could manage without a special disability room. Then used at my friend's house and on a plastic type shower surround the grip was tight after it had been up for months. Then moved to a place with a shower that has granite tile surround. I used the bar for a few months until I got permanent bars installed. It would fall after a few hours, so I just took it down and replaced it each time I showered, and it worked great on the granite for even a very long shower.. It has such a strong grip I was totally safe and secure. Now will use it when travelling and visiting friends. This is well worth the extra cost.

Works perfectly on smooth tile. If you have rough tile, it may not work for you.
I have had this one and an expandable Bridge Medical grab bar. They have worked like a charm for several years. I decided I wanted to add one to our second bath, and I tried both bars out to test size. The tile in our original bath is smooth and shiny. The tile in the second bath is a little rougher, stone looking. Both bars fell right off when I tried to put them up in the second bath. I went back to the first bath, and they again both stuck perfectly, I couldn't pull them off with all my strength. So the lesson is: this is an outstanding safety bar IF you have the right tile for it. Smooth and shiny is best. I am giving it 5 stars because it really is a life saver (or at least a potential fall saver) if you have the right kind of tile.

I was very disappointed in this item
I was very disappointed in this item. First of all, when the portable grab bar was delivered the mailing package was fine, but the Bridge Medical Single Grip Portable Grab Bar box was opened, there were what seemed to me to be coffee stains on the handle. The item was dirty! There were no detailed instructions, no return policy or indication where I could go to express my concerns. The "heads" were bigger than I expected or gathered from the online ad. When I used it for a trip I took just days after the purchase I was not able to use it in the shower where I needed it because the tiles were too small to get any suction. I ended up putting it on the bathroom door close to the bathtub/shower. It was not ideally situated so I could be safe getting in and out of the shower. To top things off it fell off the door twice. I finally gave up. To tell you the truth, I feel the $73 I spent on this item was wasted.

Surprisingly secure and helpful
I have used this portable grab bar for six months, along with another less expensive brand of grab bar. This one has seen more use, and unlike the other one (which has fallen off between uses), this one has never fallen off even once. I mostly use it to steady myself and keep perfectly balanced when entering and exiting my conventional shower/tub in order to shower. I attached it vertically to the smooth "fake marble" tub/shower surround and that works very well. Before I bought it I was concerned that it might fall off and I might get hurt. But I discovered that I don't ever need to yank on it or hang from it with all my weight during a slip or as I am falling - - instead, it is a tremendous help just by allowing me to steady myself so that don't ever slip or fall in the first place. This is a good product. It is easy to remove it and reposition it if necessary.
