Shahzia Sikander: Extraordinary Realities

I was unfamiliar with this artist until I read about her this year (2021) in The New York Times. Very much intrigued, I was pleased to find this book. It’s a great survey of her fascinating background and more fascinating work.

Sikander has learned miniature painting and mostly abandonned that work to focus on production work such as appropriation of ancient paintings, not hers, and applying decorative flourishes to pretend her giclees are original. In addition she has immersion digital experience art similar to what promoters are now doing to the work of Vincent van Gogh. SMDH inside the Museum of Fine Art at Houston exhibition from which this exhibition catalog was generated.
