Silver Ravenwolf was the very first author on the subject of witchcraft that I ever read as a child. In fact, almost every witch writer of my generation that I know has had the same experience with her work and holds her in a special place within their hearts. Her writing style is entertaining, witty and quirky. A good occult teacher to me is not someone who can string along a bunch of unnecessarily complex words (often misusing them) which when broken down means very little or absolutely nothing other than an attempt to look psuedo-intellectual and pretentious. A good occult teacher to me is someone who can take complex ideas and concepts, break them down and convey them in an easy to understand manner. This shows that they have mastery in understanding the idea or concept and are more concerned with the student understanding the idea than trying to come off as lofty and wise. Silver Ravenwolf is among these very talented teachers.Solitary Witch: The Ultimate Book of Shadows for the New Generation by Silver Ravenwolf is fantastic for anyone who is new to Witchcraft, Wicca or Neo-Paganism. It provides a strong foundation for any seeker. It’s also a fantastic reference book for anyone who already has a practice. The strength of this Book of Shadows is that it’s aimed at the solitary practitioner, as the name suggests and provides the basics for anyone to have a full personal practice. Scattered among the vast amount of spells, rituals, information and instructions are those gems of deeply inspirational wisdom that Silver scatters within her books if you’re paying attention. For example she writes, “To be a Witch, you must be brave enough to face everything inside of you, and have the courage to change the things you do not like. Being a Witch has nothing to do with spells, rituals, and unusual clothing – they are the fun stuff. To be a Witch is to desire personal transformation.”Critics will often state that they don’t like her prolific work because they don’t believe or agree with this or that within her books. Absurd! I don’t agree with everything in the book – but I’m not sure if I’ve ever agreed 100% with any book that I’ve read on witchcraft or the occult. You don’t need to believe anything in the book, just soak it up and then give it a try. Witchcraft is about experiencing and knowing what works for you, not blind-belief. This is one of the books that I always recommend to those looking for a solid foundation into the craft, as well as those who want to revisit the foundational basics.

The media could not be loaded. If you’re a newbie like me, just experiencing the world of witchcraft this is an excellent start. So much informative information for a young witch. Silver RavenWolf has done an excellent job explaining the history and development of magick. This is not an “insta-witch” book. But an all around plethora of information.. a grimoire of sorts. I just really can not grasp what the whole fuss is about Silver RavenWolf. People do still believe every practitioner is different right??Yes she's a little bold and straight forward, but I admire that. And her teachings are a little different then most, but definitely not wrong. This book is quite large and introduces almost a little bit of every, but in small portions so you can decide what your wanting to focus on. So of course you'll need some more studying and books on the path you pickAlthough the book is a little hard to navigate through, only due to the fact that the contents is listed in 5 parts with a brief description. Nothing to major, it never hurts to take your time especially on something so personal.Of course this book won't be everyone's cup of tea, but that's not a bad thing everyone learns a different way and every practitioner has their own unique practice and path.Always read with a open mind, never base your opinion on another's, because you'll never know it might work and be for you or maybe not. Follow what you feel and what your body and heart tells you.

If you've read any of my other reviews you will know I love Silver. Back when I first came to paganism, over twenty years ago, hers were the very first books I read. And I continue to use and reference them to this day. When someone new to the craft asks me for recommendations I always include her books and this one is a great one. It's the perfect tool for someone new wanting to get started with a book of shadows. This book is packed with so much information and it is full of little nuggets of wisdom from Silver. I know there's a group of pagans that don't like her or her work. I say ignore the naysayers, give her work a chance and decide for yourself.

Absolutely am in love with this book. It's not the best quality printing but the actual contents are amazing if you are studying the occult sciences like witchcraft

I have been practising for a very long time and love this book, I had a copy which I gave to a friend and missed it in my library as I refer to it so often, so have just bought another one. Silver RavenWolf work reaches all ages and all levels of experience in my opinion. I am a practising witch, but not Wiccan and still find this book helpful.I am surprised by some of the reviews and feel like I'm reading a different book; to me it is very organised and well researched with years of knowledge and wisdom. It is not a student style text book with theory only and endless pontification - her work is very pragmatic and that may not appeal to some people..Her work is succinct; it is punchy, pragmatic and positive - explains what you are about to do, why you are doing it and how to do it. I do create most my own rituals and spells, but also enjoy working other witches rituals and spells or getting some inspiration. Most ones I try I have struggled to follow; I don't feel much emotion doing them or they are just to complicated so I lose the magic. Silver Ravenwolf's are simple and joyful, always... and I have had amazing results from them. To me that is what magic is all about.
