Wow! Fantastic for polymer clay!
The media could not be loaded. Before, I struggled for hours to process polymer clay and get it down to a consistent thickness. It was such a disproportionately time-consuming part of the process!Got this specifically for that. Makes it a cinch! Forgive the video, I had to operate one-handed in order to film. It’s not bad two-handed. I got steel “spacers” from a hardware store in the bin area by the nuts and such — 4 half-inch tall and 4 quarter-inch tall. I pick my thickness, put down parchment paper (curling downward), put a spacer in each corner, put a nice cylinder of clay in the middle, and a piece of parchment paper on top (curling upward). I get a beautiful, apparently perfect circle of clay. Before unscrewing the press back up, I tap each spacer with a stick to ensure all 4 corners are under pressure. A 7” diameter circle, 1/4” thick, is about the max size I can do with Original Sculpey clay at that thickness — not due to the size of the press’s plates, but due to the resistance of the clay. At 1/2”, I could make a bigger circle. If the handles were longer, I would be able make bigger circles. One Sculpey brick gets me two 1/4” thick circles, about 6.75” in diameter, if I recall correctly. I’m careful to avoid trapping air in the clay, for example, by rolling and smudging the cylinder smooth around and flattening the top and bottom (no “cupping”). I only have to go through this about 5 to 7 times to produce processed (non-cracking) clay, compared to the recommended 20 with a clay roller machine (basically a pasta maker), which had multiple issues, including lack of a sufficiently thick setting.
