Rigging Period Ship Models: A Step-By-Step Guide to the Intricacies of Square-Rig

Disappointed
While it's true that the book does give detailed drawings of the different rigging used on ships, it DOES NOT tell you the type of knots being used for each drawing. It's like being given detailed pictures of wonderful cakes without being given the ingredients on how to make them. What's the sense? I could've gone to a ship and taken detailed pictures on my own for the same information.

Excellent Blocking and Tackling Guide
I couldn't have asked for a better reference resource. I'm just getting back into building rigged sailing vessels after decades of absence. My projects include two very old kits with poor rigging diagrams and instructions. This book answered all of my questions and solved my problems. I bought it after seeing it referenced and recommended by seasoned model builders at dedicated websites and YouTube. Very satisfied am I.

Truly a MUST HAVE for the new shipbuilder
As others have repeatedly said, this book is solely an illustration of sailing ship rigging for the model builder (except for a one page introduction). The pictures are arranged in an entirely logical manner and the labeling of the various parts being shown allows one to develop a really good feeling for the vocabulary used in sailing seamanship. Having no experience with sailing prior to beginning my first model, the use of this book to translate the seaman's lingo into something I could understand has proven invaluable. Ordering this book was a stroke of genius for me. It would have taken me many times longer to understand what I was to do without it. If you want to build a scale model of a historic sailing ship, this book should be prerequisite, if not an all out necessity.

No “Steps” in a “Step-by-Step Guide”
This book is a set of highly detailed drawings of a period ship, namely the “Melampus”. The drawings are useful, but there are no instructions or steps describing how to achieve the rigging in the drawings.

line me up
after buying all the experts books. that left me more confused than when I started. this one gave me clear one page per line layout. from where it started to where it ended. no words needed. it is based on a british frigit. but because the brit's rigged their ships the same way.it translates to the man of war ships nicely.if your building model ships. even if their not british. this is the one rigging book you shouldn't be without. get this one first.

Rigging a ship with confidence
This is an excellent reference book for modellers of Square Rig ships. Very little text included but this book has close up illustrations on how to rig virtually all areas of most sailing vessels of the 18th Century. The clear exploded views of each part of a ships rigging will help any new or experienced modeller get things right first time.

Superbly clear, very useful
This book is very clearly laid out, breaking down each rope and line, on each mast, by purpose and clearly shows where it runs and attaches. This has allowed me to add an extra level of rigging on my 1/700th ship models that I wouldn't have thought possible. A must have. Note that the rigging shown is the British system, and that other navies such as France and Spain had small differences.

Worth having on the shelf if you like model ships.
A bit more written detail would be better. The diagrams are excellent.
