What you're calling “brush on paint” is meant to be used in a paint sprayer, the “spray paint” is for non professional people who don’t have a paint sprayer. Can you brush it on? You could but its not going to look very good so its really just a matter of how good you want the final result to look like.

Well yes, as a customer of this product & as advertised. Indeed is John Deere yellow. However, as a cheaper alternative, fleet farm, farm & fleet, tractor supplies versions are very similar, almost exact. Personally for the cost of a can that simply says John Deere on it, could buy 2-3 cans of the other for the cost of one of these. Just my .2. But none the less, the paint is indeed what it says.

How many cans does it take to spray deck?

I used Rustoleum “Rust Reformer” (which is a primer not a finish paint) after just blasting my deck off at the car wash. I scraped off the loose flakes of the original John Deere paint, I didn’t sand or wire wheel anything, just removed the loose stuff before priming. The Rust Reformer I had on hand was black (if you’re buying some a lighter color like white or gray would be ideal). I let it dry 24 hours then painted over with this John Deere yellow spray paint. 1 coat covered the black primer, I ended up putting down 3 light coats, allowing it to dry a few hours between coats and got a excellent end result on my 42” deck.

Note: The can says you don’t need to use a primer first, it can be sprayed directly on clean bare metal. I used the Rust Reformer because 1) I’m lazy and didn’t want to sand the deck down to clean metal. 2) I’ve used it before and always get excellent results, even over rusty and less than clean surfaces, as long as you at least scrape off the real loose stuff first.

I have just under 1/2 can of this yellow paint left over after 3 coats on the top of my deck.

On the underside of my deck I again scrapped off the loose stuff, sprayed it in the car wash and put down 2 coats of the Rustoleum Rust Reformer. 24 hours drying between coats, then I put on 2 coats of Rustoleum “Truck Bed Liner” from a spray can. It came out perfect. This will be the 3rd mower deck I’ve done this to, it works great. Some people say it will make grass stick to it so don’t do it. Hogwash, the grass doesn’t stick any more or less than not doing it. At the end of the year I spray it off and its good to go. I’d still rather have grass stuck to the underside (which hurts nothing) than rust (which will ruin your deck) from not using it. Like I said though, after about 3-4 mowings you’ll have no more or less grass stuck under there than if you just painted it and used a special coating. The difference is after 3-4 mowings the painted/coated deck will be mostly chipped off and rusting, the bed liner deck will still be good to go.
