Please don't buy WITHOUT the teacher's guide! LOVE THIS
Wiley Blevins is the leader in phonics instruction and has published a great curriculum through Sadlier. That being said, please purchase the teacher's guide! Otherwise, you WILL be confused like the reviewer below. The reviewer states that there's a cumulative review at the end of week 1 that includes sounds other than /m/. That's true, but if you were to read the teacher's guide you'd see this is because this cumulative review is given over about 4 weeks! This is a curriculum written for teachers, and it's assuming every child in the class won't be tested every week. Children who are tested on Week 1 would only be expected to know /m/ while children tested on Week for would be expected to know all 4 sounds.Since you're at home, just ask your child the sound they've learned for the week. :-)Also - there's not too much writing - unless you aren't following the pacing guide in the teacher's book! As I stated in my review video this is not simply a workbook that you're meant to follow in order. In level K there's really minimal writing - the only thing the children are required to write in the first few weeks are the letter sounds, and as they advance two letter and three letter words like "can" or "am". Some places where you think they are supposed to write, they are supposed to be pasting pictures from the back of the book. (That's why you need to get the TEACHERS GUIDE!!)Also - remember this is a program for Kindergarteners. Your 3 or 4 year old may find it challenging to do the writing, so please start at the appropriate age. They don't need to write the answers to "What words can you think of that start with m?" Imagine if they said 'magician' - we don't expect them to be able to spell that, you can write it for them!I recommend this as a HOMESCHOOL phonics reading curriculum if and only if you are going to take the time to sit down, read through the teacher's guide, and implement the program. If you don't have time to do that, then just go with Reading.com or Teach Your Child to read in 100 Easy lessons. (Which I would highly recommend as a starting point anyway since your child will learn to read faster. Phonics to Reading was written for classroom use so it is more of a learn-to-read-over-6 months type program. After finishing one of those programs, start Phonics to Reading Level A WITH THE TEACHERS GUIDE LOL)Remember, one of the reasons phonics instruction fails in schools is because of ineffective teaching. When you decide the teacher's guide is not important or too expensive....it means you are ignoring the expertise that those who wrote it provide. The teachers guide is much cheaper from the publisher vs. on Amazon. There are several people who have done teacher's guide walk throughs on YouTube that can show you in depth what to expect. Happy teaching!!!

Confusing
The order is kind of confusing. It starts off teaching the letter “m,” which is ok, but then at the end of the lesson, it does a cumulative assessment with letters that weren’t taught in the lesson. Then it goes on to teach the sound of the letter “A,” and then immediately skips to writing the word/letter “I” and writing the word “can.” Again, c, n, and I haven’t even been taught at this point yet. So why am I having my child write sentences with these words?Furthermore, in my opinion, this book has too much writing. That’s a whole separate skill. It’s kind of disappointing, since it was referred by Akeeba Maze and thought for sure it would be amazing, but it was not!I ended up switching to “All About Reading Blast Off to Reading, Level 1,” and I’m loving it!! My child is reading by lesson 3.
