Rather standard 6-row is a light-colored base malt made from a blend of American 6-row barley varieties. 6-Row barley has a much higher protein content and enzymatic power than 2-row barley. Inclusion of standard 6-row is therefore very advantageous for recipes calling for large proportions of specialty malts, Wheat malts, or adjuncts, which have little or no enzymatic power themselves. 6-Row barley is also used to match historical beer styles from settings where 2-row barley was not widely available. High proportions of 6-row barley may necessitate the use of adjuncts or require protein rests in mashing.

happy so far
I want to try adding some other grains and my understanding is that the enzymes in 6-row work better for that. I'm trying it out and I'll see how it works. But the product seems like a good product and it seems like a good value from Amazon when I consider the free shipping.

Impressed
We enjoy home brewing but it's been awhile since we've put up any batches of beer. Believe it or not, a Mr Beer kit renewed our interest and then this popped up; don't let the price fool you - q

A new adventure.
I have a truly excellent looking batch of beer in the works with this as the key ingredient. It's what finally got me to try a batch from scratch with all raw ingredients. The grains all look great, as if care was put into growing and bagging them. I guess 6-row only grows in the States and should taste more like cereal rather than malt...which could be great in a high grain beer. I'm stoked to taste the final product.

Adds a little graininess to your brew
Occassionally suppliment with this 6-row when I want to add a little grainy flavor to the brew. As a homebrewer I am always looking to try different recipes and try different grains and hops to see what works and what doesn't. This is a good quality grain, I have really enjoyed the flavors that I have produced using this.

Great base malt, 6-row doesn't get the love it deserves
As a longtime homebrewer, I like Rahr malts, and have been using their grains for years.Grains are high-quality, roasting is consistent, flavor is good, enzymatic action is reliable. This one has a nice, grainy flavor that's great in lighter malt-forward styles (e.g., old-style American lagers), good with other malts/adjuncts where you aren't going to get a lot of diastatic power otherwise..I also like how they're selling these convenient 10 lb bags now. It's the right amount for most brewers if you're gonna use this as a base malt (or two batches where you're gonna use 5 lbs of this and then a couple other specialty malts). One thing to be aware of, there's a lot of protein in 6-row barley, so you're gonna wanna do a protein rest.
