The Last Kingdom: Season Four [Blu-ray]

Great tv show, I first watched this show on Netflix an glad it got a home release so I can watch it anywhere

I love Bernard Cornwell's series of books (12 now) about Uthred and the Danes vs the Saxons. In condensing these volumes for the TV series, some things are left out, but what is emphasized are the more importance aspects of the history of the pre-Norman period. While telling the fictional story of Uthred, the author places him within the historical period of King Alfred the Great (the only English sovereign to be called "great') and his descendants. I really appreciated the characterization of King Alfred as a thoughtful, educated man who knew how to protect his country and who fostered learning in a basically illiterate period. The portrayal of his daughter as a warrior queen is also true to what we know of the history of the period. The only bit I like less is the carnage and blood in the battles and other quarrels. But then, I guess it was a bloody period. It seems more horrific when you are seeing a decapitation than when reading it, however.

If you're a fan of history like me, then Bernard Cornwell is about as good as it gets for historical fiction. The Last Kingdom series faithfully follows the complex political situation of Saxon England before the arrival of the Normans, during the tumultuous period of the unification of the four kingdoms into a single country under Alfred the Great, as told through the eyes of Utrecht of Bebbanburg, of the kingdom of Northumbria. The characters are well developed, complex, catching you up in their lives, and the events of one of the most interesting periods in history. It lays the groundwork for the events that lead to growth of the British Empire, setting the standard for western civilization for hundreds of years to come.

Last Kingdom has only gotten better each season; the infusion of Netflix $$$ enabled greater production values, sweeping arcs and some top-flight acting talent. If you're a Vikings fan, try this as something based on actual historical events and battles. Uhtred's quest to reclaim his ancestral fortress continue to place him in the crossfire of every warlord in Englalaand and he struggles to keep his honor and his freedom.

First, the cost for this Blu-ray was too much - period. Second, I think it was Rotten Tomatoes that stated this season there is a 'loss of emotional intensity' which I must agree with. I am not sure what changed but the first 8 episodes seem to lack something, something was off, seemed weak. Perhaps it was the loss of King Alfred (David Dawson) who was extraordinary. Now, more of the heavy leads have been loss (Ian Hart, Eliza Butterworth) so I fear the worse but episodes 9 and 10 were excellent so...we hope for the best.What REALLY has started to bug me about the series is the lack of some simple cosmetics, a reality check. The characters can run for days, up and down hills, live in filth, and yet they look pristine, shiny clean? Uhtred hair is always clean and his head is always shaved. And, what is with his costume anyway, he looks more like a punk star than a warrior of old with his pony tail. The old look was much better. Plus, he never ages a day, not one! Can we get a bit of reality? Even the cover art of the Blu-ray looks ridiculous, like something off a video game. I am not sure who or what changed but...it has.Nevertheless, I love the series and all the books and cannot understand why Netflicks would cancel it after season five...probably their option on the actors has run out and they will have to renegotiate new and much more expensive contracts but, yeah, this Blu-ray was way too expensive and I won't do it again. 4-stars.

great series , well written with a good balance of action and politics to keep you interested , well cast with actors who bring there roles to a level of reality, that suspends your focus on your own worries for a hour at a time . looking forward to the next season.

Pardonnez la comparaison mais les deux grandes sagas Vikings et Last Kingdom sont vraiment très intéressantes.Si tout est très bien tourné, si les acteurs sont vraiment dans leur rôle, si il y a les suspens nécessaire, les deux nous demandent d'aller regarder comment se situent les "petites histoires" dans la grande Histoire. Parfait!!

The Last Kingdom is one of the best shows on Netflix right now. This is a quality production with amazing actors and the story line, the pace and the characters are gripping from the very start. I have watched all 4 seasons multiple times, and read the books as well. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good medieval action packed historical show that deals with loyalty, friendships, family, war, politics and love.
