Universal Have Come Up Trumps - Again
Once again, Universal have done true justice to their former stars of formular comedy / slapstick. No point in going into the movies themselves with the exception of A & C Meet Frankenstein; by far their best. This one was helped by having Bela Lugosi,Lon Chaney Jnr and Glenn Strange as co-stars; they played their monster roles straight instead of "camp". As the original stars (Logosi & Chaney) of the Dracula & Wolfman movies they added the right atmosphere which greatly assisted with the fun. (Glenn Strange had also played the monster in "House of Frankenstein"; not the same as Boris Karloff's chilling portrayal, but, never the less, very very good. I purchased this movie on its own and paid around $1.25 more than I had paid for all eight.Once again, on the production side, the QUALITY of these eight movies can only be described as excellent. I might add that I have experienced none of the freeze up problems that other reviewers have mentioned. Neither has my son to whom I have lent all three of these collections to. Universal must have taken them from the original Masters, they are too sharp and clear to have been restored. Universal proberly don't have any Masters for the trailers, these have been reproduced with all the scratches and wear and tear that one expects to see after fifty plus years of use.All of these movies are very enjoyable and are shown uncut. Buy this set and Vols 1 & 2 also; same quality and you can't go wrong. The one and only fault that I can find is that Universal have put all eight on two discs instead of four. This format plays just fine but there is always a high risk of damage to at least one side of the two sided discs, you just might lose two movies. Of course if you are that unlucky, then you could always purchase a second set, at this price you can afford to.Please Note: To save time I have copied, pasted and then edited my earlier review on Best of A & C Vol 1 as most of this review is appropiate to all three.

Abbott & Costello Around The World And On Venus!
"Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" (1948) is the best movie they ever made, and one of the funniest films ever released. In addition to featuring Universal's greatest monsters, the movie has some of the duo's funniest dialogue. Chick (Bud Abbott): "People pay McDougal cash to come in here and get scared." Wilbur: (Lou Costello): "I'm cheating him. I'm getting scared for nothing." Chick: "You're making enough noise to wake up the dead!" Wilbur: "I don't have to wake him up. He's up." This movie rates 5 stars."Mexican Hayride" (1948) showcases Lou Costello's brilliance at physical comedy. Every time he hears music, he has to dance the samba. His attempt at bullfighting is hilarious. However, Bud plays a bigger heel than usual, making him a very unsympathetic character. I give this movie 3 stars."Abbott and Costello Meet The Killer, Boris Karloff" (1949) is one of my favorite films. The Lost Caverns Hotel is the perfect setting for this murder mystery/comedy. Dead bodies keep turning up in different rooms and, in one especially funny scene, two corpses play bridge with Abbott and Costello! The scene in the lost caverns with the bottomless pit is scary and surreal, resembling hell itself. I have to give this movie 5 stars. In "Abbott and Costello In The Foreign Legion" (1950), Bud and Lou are wrestling promoters who travel to Algeria to bring back Abdullah, a proud wrestler who refuses to lose any scripted matches. Bud and Lou are tricked into joining the Foreign Legion, avoid getting killed, encounter many mirages, and manage to save the day. I give this film 4 stars."Abbott and Costello Meet The Invisible Man" (1951) is another terrific film. Bud and Lou, having graduated from detective school, set out to clear boxer Tommy Nelson, who was framed for murdering his manager. Tommy uses the invisibility formula to avoid arrest until his name is cleared. With Tommy's invisible help, Louie the Looper (Lou Costello) wins the middleweight championship, in one of the funniest fights ever filmed. This is another 5 star film."Comin' Round The Mountain" (1951) is my least favorite film in this collection. The scene with Lou and Margaret Hamilton, battling it out with voodoo dolls, is one of the few highlights. Dorothy Shay has too many musical numbers and Bud Abbott, playing a character named Al Stewart, should have sung "Year Of The Cat." At least that would have given him more screen time. I'm afraid I can only give this movie 2 stars."Lost In Alaska" (1952) is a moderately funny film. Nugget Joe McDermott (Tom Ewell) is a former sheriff and prospector who finds gold, but loses his heart to a dance hall girl. Bud and Lou save him from committing suicide, after the floozy he's in love with doesn't want to marry him. It's interesting to note how Bud and Lou almost died of heat stroke and dehydration in the desert when they were in the Foreign Legion, only to nearly freeze to death wandering around, lost in Alaska. I give this movie 3 stars."Abbott and Costello Go To Mars" (1953) is unfairly criticized as being one of their worst films. Having traveled the globe in their movies, it was only natural that Abbott and Costello go out of this world! When Bud and Lou accidentally fly a rocket and land in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, they assume that they're on Mars. When they actually fly to Venus, which is completely populated by beautiful women, they initially assume they're back on Earth. The Three Stooges also have some similar experiences in their feature film "Have Rocket, Will Travel" (1959). The stooges accidentally fly a rocket to Venus. In both films, the accidental astronauts return to Earth as heroes, complete with a ticker tape parade. Perhaps that's why critics don't rate "Abbott and Costello Go To Mars" highly. This film features sight gags, such as them flying a rocket through the Lincoln Tunnel and making the Statue of Liberty duck, instead of featuring their usual humorous dialogue. I give this film a firm 5 stars. The total number of stars for all of the films is 32. Divided by the 8 movies, that gives this boxed set collection a total of 4 stars.

Deshalb VORSICHT beim kaufen!!
