Good features but bad sound detection

So this thing seems solidly built, and it's fun to watch while it operates. But it's supposed to begin operation when detecting sound, and I found that the sound has to be pretty loud in order for it detect it. Like a bunch of kids on Halloween talking in typical kid-level volume wouldn't get it going. I had to yell or clap loudly to start it up. Kinda defeats the purpose.
