What is benefit of having high and low setting? Thanks

Low heat setting is best for porous materials such as fabric, paper, and especially Styrofoam. High heat setting is best for harder materials such as wood, metal, and plastic. When using the low heat setting, be sure to use low-heat glue sticks. Glue sticks rated for high-heat use will not melt sufficiently at the low heat setting.

does this have an on/off switch?

No, there is no on-off switch, just the plug and high and low settings.

Can this gun stand up straight by itself?

Yes, on an angle, resting on the metal kick stand located at the nozzle. You can see it in one of the pictures on the bottom of the item description page.

Is the glue gun itself made in china? the product listing is confusing it says made in usa but on another surebonder glue gun it says made in china

Mine is 5yrs old and as is everything else. Made in China.
