Great, great book
I have been doing a lot of reading on Humboldt. This is a great book about him, his contributions, and the related art. I love art and history. I love it even more when both are combined. The book leans more towards history than art, but there is plenty of both. The essays are distinct piecesso there is a small amount of repetition between them, but certainly not a distraction.I enjoyed going over to Wikipedia to get backstories on the many topics discussed. This is a good starting point for exploring other influential artists and thinkers in early American history.Highly recommended.

Alexander von Humboldt’s hidden impact on the USA
An often forgotten researcher of the world as an ecological whole this overview of Alexander von Humboldt highlights his role in USA ideas of nationhood even if it hasn’t achieved the lofty goals that Humboldt thought it could achieve.

A beautiful book on the legacy of an important naturalist
A beautifully designed book on the fascinating and under-recognized legacy of a seminal naturalist. The larger-scale format allows for wonderful illustrations and the texts are informative and scholarly. I wish I'd seen the exhibition this book is a companion to, but I get the feeling this volume is a excellent substitute.
