Q: The filter has a slot on one side that will clearly fit another flat, slide-in filter. What exactly is the slot for? A colored filter?

That is a good question. The manufacturer gave the best answer, but I would have guessed a square filter holder myself, but it would be too difficult to slide in and out to use quickly. I just handhold it in front of the lens snugly and take the necessary picture, then remove when done. Easy peasy.
