Q: I have a 3m service vacuum model 497. it's *very* old and i don't see anything in the model number other than 497. will this filter fit my vacuum?

yes, 3M sold the division that made their vacuums to Desco Industries. They go under the name SCS. All of the filters and accessories by SCS are the same as the 3m Stuff.

Q: what is the difference between type 1 and type 2?

The Type 2 would be for larger particles (Monochrome Toner and Dust). The Type 1 for Smaller Particle (color Toner).This link explains the association between 3m and Desco Industries (SCS).
