Works for the garden and keeps the cats from taking a dump
Has worked for one year keeping the stray cats from taking a dump in my garden. Also, works to keep the neighbors dog from hanging over the top rail of the fence. Mild shock using fire wire but frankly I think good old electric fence wire may work better. One thing to consider is that the electrical ground needs to be GOOD, otherwise you won't get a good jolt due to physics. Ring terminals on the wire would also work better. I just re-connect every six months to get a good connection.

It works!
Immediately after we planted a hedge of English Laurel, the local deer started treating it as an all-you-can-eat salad bar. The hedge had no chance. The deer would move in every time fresh leaves appeared. We installed an eight-foot tall plastic fence, but the deer just broke through it. So we installed a tougher fence, but the deer found a way under it. Weighted logs at the bottom of the fence had no effect as the deer jumped over. We also tried deer repellent, fishing line, attaching bells to the fence, rags soaked in ammonia, and scattered chunks of Irish Spring soap. A motion-activated water spray helped a bit, but a neighbor saw deer using it as a drinking fountain. At my witโs end, I started leaving food for the deer a couple of hundred feet from the hedge. The deer equivalent of paying protection money. None of this worked, and thoughts about the deer started to take over my waking hours. If someone asked me how I was doing, I would respond with a long diatribe about my battle with the deer. The deer became my only topic of conversation. In desperation, I ordered a Patriot PE5, expecting this would be just one more failure. But to my amazement, it has worked for the last 12 months. I recommend smearing peanut butter on the wire in a few places.

Birds Do It, Squirrels and Bees Don't
I believe they call it bird seed for a reason, and got very tired of my squirrel friends muscling the birds off the feeder and hogging all the food. Fortunately I had a 120V electrical outlet in fairly close (30 feet) proximity to where I wanted my bird feeder pole to be located (at least six feet from the nearest tree branch). Because this fence energizer is not outdoor rated (not sure why they would make it that way) I also bought a waterproof enclosure off Amazon. I then ran two 20 gauge wires slightly underground to the base of the 4" by 4" pole I used to mount the bird feeder, which hangs off a 2" by 4" arm off the 4" by 4". I then ran the hot and ground wires around the post and the 2" by 4" arm. VERY IMPORTANT. I assumed the wood post would act as a natural insulator for the ground wire but it does not. So I set the ground wire off the wood about a 1/2" using wood insulators I also bought from Amazon. I ran the hot wire directly on the surface of the wood and used metal staples to space and secure the wire. I connected the two wires from the energizer to the hot and ground wires running up the post (doesn't make a difference which is which) and then plugged the energizer in. I bought an electric fence tester (an inexpensive one from Amazon) to confirm I was getting the voltage across the hot and ground wires. Two thumbs up. Now we are all one happy family. My three squirrels have plenty of residual seeds dropped by the birds. They sit on the ground and look longingly at the bird feeder only six feet above them. They also look at the signs I posted for them, "Caution - Electrical Fence" which has lots of significance to them. Because this is high voltage but very low current, they (and us) just get a little pop which gets their (and my) attention when touched. And, I'm seeing so many more birds enjoying what was meant for them in the first place.

Great buy
This has been a great charger, we've bought several and have not been disappointed. I can't speak for the other reviews but we have received the correct order everytime and they have worked perfectly. This 8/2 charge is much less than some of the stronger chargers they have. I think this one would be ideal for chickens or rabbits, not dogs or livestock. We have also purchased their stronger chargers and prefer them. (The 40/10 I believe) We use them for our goats, pigs, and dogs.I've tested the fence bare footed to truly see how animals would fair with it. It works let's just say that. Lol I wouldn't recommend doing this total disclousure. ๐The electricity pulses, it isn't a constant stream of electricity which is perfect.Lowes has metal slotted rods you can use for the grounding rod and we just bought insulated copper wiring to connect the fence to charger and charger to ground. If the fence starts to lose it's charge I would check for oxidation of your wiring if you use copper wiring like us. A clean cut and new wiring exposed to the fence and ground fixed this issue for us and this time we wrapped the wire attached to the fence with electrical tape to insulate it and help prevent oxidation. It didn't oxidize for many many months so you by no means have to have the tape, just be mindful of this if it starts to lose charge. These energizers are NOT meant to be in the weather so you'll need to make a covering for them. We merely screwed a small plastic tote to a 2X4 and garden stake then hung the energizer inside of it.Please don't believe every bad review on fence energizers as more often than not it's the error of the person not the product.Would recommend. ๐

B/O units Patriot PE2
Purchased 2 and neither of them work! The unit has the flashing light but does not power the line. Do not purchase this item. The packaging had staples and one of them did not have the instruction manual so you could tell they were already opened and returned, in my opinion. Notice the torn plastic and the 2 stapels on this package and the other package not paperwork or twist tie on plug.
