Fabulous book by a brilliant scientist/naturalist, but you must really focus.
I can't believe I lived to be this old and had never read this! I read a bit over half of the sequential chapters and had to skip to the end, so I could write my review for GR & print out notes (from the review & all forms of my notes) for my banned book club meeting. (The library provides print copies, but I had to get my own, so I could highlight & make marginal notes, in addition to more lengthy notes on index cards (big ones); my son dropped by, saw what I had spread out on my table and laughed: "You're not reading; your studying!" What a brilliant man Darwin was! I loved getting my head into scientific theory, even if far removed from my discipline (sociology) & couldn't wait to discuss his theory, how he developed (my methodology was grounded theory--start with the data & as you develop the theory, test it against new data, so I got this and appreciated it). Sadly, no one else in the club as read nearly as much as I had (I suspect this was true for the librarian leading the group, too), never mind having "really" read it, so the group talked about anything other than the theory itself!!! This led to a disagreement with the librarian (private, via email) and my decision to leave the club. It was SUCH a terrific book & deserved to be discussed.

El libro tiene un poco de arrugas, pero son unas cosas muy leves. La información está completa y tiene temas muy interesantes. Para cualquier estudiante de biología es una recomendación definitiva

A revolutionary idea that still withstands the test of time.
If asked what book would I save in the event that civilization collapses it would be the On the Origin of Species. It's the one simple argument with great explanatory power to account for the many species on this planet and how all life forms arrived naturally. As well as Darwin demonstrating, quite beautifully if I might add, that all living organisms are fundamentaly related to each other in the great tree of life.

The Birds and the Barnacles
Dry as dust, difficult to read and, in places, tedious in the extreme - but I expected nothing less from what is essentially a scientific paper from the Victorian era. That said; it is also thoroughly enlightening, and essential reading for anyone who wants a true understanding of what 'Darwinism' is. Getting to grips with this work allows you to appreciate how Darwin's theories have been built-upon, revised, improved, misquoted, misinterpreted, misrepresentated and even hi-jacked over the past century-and-a-half. As a layman I opened this book for the first time many years ago expecting more monkeys and less birds and barnacles, only later did I realise that Darwin covered that topic thoroughly in his one of his other great works; 'The Descent of Man.'

Powerful
In his, "On the Origin of Species", Charles Darwin presents the single most powerful and elegant theory in recorded human history. His writing is at times overly baroque and ornamented, with a period fondness for the passive voice. In no way does this diminish the power of his arguments, or of his explanatory powers. Nor should this suggest that Darwin is not a capable prose-stylist; he is at times transcendent, made so by the elegance of his logic, the sheer breadth of his observations, and the conclusion to which the evidence led him, and to which he leads the reader. This particular edition has an excellent forward by William Bynum, who expertly (and succinctly) summarizes Darwin's life and the work's publication history. It benefits even more from an updated index, and added appendices containing biographical sketches and explanatory notes. The Damien Hirst painting on the cover is a bit unnecessary, but then hopefully the reader will not see a great deal of this book's cover, anyway.

Quick and perfect delivery. Mind you what I received in the mail, was not as displayed in the image so loss of points for that. Cover difference isn't a big deal, but I don't like when sellers take liberties there. But excited to read

Overall, the book is in good condition. The paper quality is decent, and the printing is excellent. The content is well-detailed and thoroughly explained. Since this book is published by Penguin, there’s no doubt about its authenticity. I recommend buyers opt for the Penguin Classics edition, as books of this nature require in-depth explanations and references from reliable sources.
