The more ways you have to make fire the better
Though fire pistons are finicky if you pay attention to the device as a system and know it's requirements it does work and can even light wet tinder with a little extra work. more over this method is over ten thousand years old and was used in Asia and The Polynesian islands long before the western diesel engine principle was discovered. They did it with bamboo and carved drilled wood. their gaskets were sinew or cartalige or even natural rubber. If ancient tribesmen could make a working fire piston a modern survivalist should be able to do the same.

Everything pictured I received.
Well made. Well thought out.My 1st gripe is the weight of the brass significantly increases the weight. I'd love if there was an all aluminum version. My 2nd gripe is that the air sealing cap would be better if it had 2 compartments to hold a small amount of char cloth and the 2nd compartment to hold the lubricant & spare O-rings.Other than those this is a great kit!

Awesome
I have never made fire without a lighter or matches before. It took me about 20 minutes to figure out. Here's my advice:The instructions say to push the piston as fast as you can. I originally interpret this as "palm the top of the piston and violently smash into down as hard as i can." But this isn't how it works. Hold the pipe in one 1⃣ hand against a hard surface, and with the palm of the other, rapidly and firmly push down hard. It's not just about speed. It's about firmness. I wish I could explain it better but its a bit counter intuitive. At least to me it was until I has my eureka moment. Hope this helps for what's it worth.

It works as described but it still has limited useability/Practicality.
First off on the device itself, I have no complaints it works as described. After some practice I'm able to get an ember 7 out of 10 attempts using very fine char material.I took a star off not because of any flaw with the device just the amount of support material required to operate the piston and the likelihood that I would ever use the device. So if by chance my lighter runs out of fluid, my waterproof matches are smashed beyond usability, my Fero rod gets lost, and I can't find a piece of flint or quartz to use with my carbon steel knife then I know I can get an ember to start a fire with this device (provided I have the char material, the O-ring grease and the means to clean the piston between attempts and/or after the fire is lit.)I don't regret my purchase in any way and the price is right for what you get, but I consider it more of a teaching tool or odd curiosity than something I am ever likely to use as a primary, secondary or even tertiary method to get a fire started but as a physics geek it's something I do find fascinating.
