I see it says 3+ but a lot of reviewers are using them for younger children. Do the pieces pose a choking hazard?

Im not really sure why this set is labeled 3 and up because it is the New Sprouts quality line of food and those are labeled 3 and up so Im not really sure why this toy has the label 3 and up unless they think the sorting and color matching is more at the 3yr old level. My daughter is 19mos old and plays with these toys I don't feel any of them are small enough to be a choking hazard, the smallest piece is the berries and since it's grouped in a cluster I don't really see how anybody could choke on that.

Still waiting for answer from manufacturer if this is bpa and lead free and meets all us toy safety standards. has anyone else found this out?

It means there are some, but no way to tell how much within a specified limit. If they are saying they are CPSIA compliant then okay, definitely not free. In toys geared for children under the age of 12… CPSC compliant regulation amounts in the US: under 0.1% of DEHP, DBP, and BBP (phthalates/“BPA” etc. like mentioned above) or no more than 100 ppm of lead. So make your choice with that info however you will Lol

How do these compare to Melissa & Doug's play food?

I would say they are similar in quality, though the Melissa and Doug foods are larger (especially things like the banana). I like this set because it has a few more unusual foods, and I like that it has certain foods in multiple colors (like the peppers and grapes). But we enjoy the Melissa and Doug set as well.
