This is kind of an oddball thing that probably not a lot of people have a need for, so it's not common, but I was glad to find it. It worked perfectly for my little project. Quality seems very good.

...but is the best solution to get a cat5 port on the exterior side of the wall.

Seems to work fine. Cap attachment isn't great, but I don't care because my box is indoors and will always have a cable attached. It is easy to remove. You need a 1 inch hole diameter at a minimum. It will not fit into a 15/16 inch hole. It fit a bit loosely into the approximately 1-1/16" hole in my box (maybe 27mm). I think it will seal around that hole. Standard 3/4" knockouts in electrical equipment are often 1-1/8 in. I think the seal would be marginal in a hole that large. I think it would work in even a 1-1/4 inch hole but it won't be water tight. The side intended to face into a box has a ribbed seal that is larger then the o-ring seal on the other side. It is possible to insert it backwards and the lockring fits on either side. Be careful if you care about the water seal.

Use these for enclosures that I build up requiring ethernet connections. They help keep moisture/dust from getting into the enclosure.
