Q: would this fit a 40 inch parlor acoustic guitar?

I use it for my Gretsch Jim Dandy model and its around 36" long from top of head to bottom of body. So a 40" guitar should probably fit in the Gator case. It works great and I am going to order more cases from this company in the future.

No , the Hummingbird is a dreadnought sized guitar ... the classic case will fit standard classical guitars and up to a grand concert acoustic guitar. You would be much better served by the Gator GBE-DREAD gig bag.

Q: is this gig bag too big for a 1/2 size guitar?

It should be just the right size for a 1/2 size guitar.
