The wildlife of South Africa: A field guide to the animals and plants of the region

My favourite guide. The book makes it possible to ID things so quickly that you don't miss anything by reading through descriptions!!! I used this book more than any other while in Kruger National Park. It has nearly everything you are likely to see and extremely helpful brief remarks to help you--for example whether you should expect a herd or a small group, and in what kind of habitat. Every photo has the size of the animal right underneath it which was also very helpful. For pre-trip reading each section also explains the key features of the organisms--plants, birds, fungi, reptiles, herps, even insects and fish. The absolute best kind of field guide.

If you're going to Southern Africa, buy this book. It is a great book and I left it with a very well read South African who loved this book and hadn't seen it before. Also in Africa this book retails at £30.00.

Took this with me on Safari to the Kruger National Park, South Africa and our Ranger was impressed and said it was an excellent book and it was, comprehensive detail on all you need to know!

Good as a general all round book, if you need more detail the I would suggest more specialist books, but for us the book covered most of what we saw.

The most wide-ranging book on all aspects of SA wildlife - well illustrated and some useful details in the text.Not for specialists, but great for basic recognition and interest.
