Yes, that's right - the screen tube attaches directly to the valve inlet nside your pot/mash tun - and filters the mash. No false bottom needed when you use this. Works GREAT!

Will this work with a 3/8" ball valve?

I am building a mini mash tun (I do small batches). Could I remove the screen from the nipple and cut it to the desired length?

Yes, Its just held on with a hose clamp. It would be easy to cut to length. I actually used mine as a pre filter before the pump in a fuel tank! :)
