Shaolin #6 Close Strike: The First Set Taught in the Northern Shaolin Style

A rare gem
At first glance a detailed reference manual for Bak Sil Lum (Northern Shaolin) #6… a valuable reference for anyone interested in Northern Shaolin in which one can find the names (in both English and Chinese characters), detailed descriptions, many pictures, and a large section on applications of movements in the form. But this book is much more than a reference manual….upon closer inspection one finds many gems “hidden” within its pages…. including calligraphy by Sifu Paul Eng and Sifu Lung Kai Ming, "Sage Words Concerning Northern Shaolin Style” by Lung Tze Cheung (a close disciple of Gu Ruzhang), and many stories and historical notes by numerous well-known martial artists... concerning Northern Shaolin style kung Fu, the author, Sifu Rick Wing, and his teacher, Grandmaster Wong Jack Man…. to whom this book is dedicated to.Thank-you Sifu Rick Wing for all of your hard work and efforts in bringing to the kung-fu community this great treasure.

Must have for Gu Ruzhang's line of Northern Shaolin practitioners.
Anyone studying Grandmaster Gu Ruzhang's style of Northern Shaolin (Bei Shao Lin Quan/Bak Siu Lam Kuen) should have this work in their library, as well as the other Northern Shaolin books by Shifu Rick Wing. The first half is filled with personal stories by many influential masters as well as some history of the style. The second part covers the Duan Da taolu (form) and some applications. This book will also give a good idea of what the style is about and how it differs from other Shaolin based styles. Truly a treasure, highly recommend it.

Great reference for Shaolin #6, and interesting historical accounts
This book does an absolutely great job documenting Shaolin #6: Close Strike. The forewords and recollections provide a priceless picture of the Kung Fu scene in San Francisco and surrounding areas in the 60s and 70s from many practitioners who were there at the time, and are a very enjoyable read. The chapter Introduction to the Northern Shaolin Style is a fascinating history of Gu Ruzhang and his exploits, as well as a discussion on the order in which the 10 forms that are the core of the style are taught, and why that might be. At the same time, Sifu Wing never writes as though he is the the authority on the subject of the Northern Shaolin Style or it's history; he explains that what he writes is his understanding of the subject based on the knowledge he has received from various sources.I trained primarily in the southern styles Hung Gar and Choy Lee Fut for over 10 years, and have been training in Northern Shaolin for 3 years now, and while I don't consider myself an expert, to my mind Sifu Rick Wing has written a well-balanced description of northern and southern styles in his introduction and Commentary on Shaolin #6.The descriptions of each movement of the form are very well done; each contains the lyrical name, the name in calligraphy, a clear and detailed explanation of the specific actions and postures within the movement, pictures of them in progress, and a picture from the perspective of a student following their teacher. These Back Views are collected as a group after the full description, which is a very useful high-level guide to the form for studying. A basic application or two of each movement is also collected after the full description; another useful feature for beginners. Finally, notes on the lyrical names and a condensed list of the movements by name are provided.Although the version of Shaolin #6 that I learned differs in a few movements from the one presented in this book, I find this a great resource in many ways, and am very thankful to Sifu Wing for producing it.
