Q: Can you explain how your straws are different and more sustainable than agave and other plant fiber straws?

Hi Allie, great question. First these straws are bio"plastic" straws. Notice the word Plastic! Second, wheat stem straws are NOT manufactured. Agave, sugar cane fiber straws, PLA and PHA straws go through numerous manufacturing processes which emit CO2 emissions during each phase. It's been tested that these straws are only marginally less energy intensive compared with plastic straws! Hardly sustainable in our opinion. Most people only focus on the end of life cycle, but the production phase is equally as critical. Additionally, most of these straws contain all sorts of additional chemical binders, plasticizers, agents and other chemicals you can't even pronounce to make the finish product. On the other hand, our straws are made one ingredient! Lastly, these bioplastic options will unlikely break down unless commercially composted (and some are not even compostable) and thus may remain in our eco systems for dozens of years if not longer. Additionally, it's important to consider the biobased content or makeup, which is the portion of the straw made from sustainable resources. For instance, our straws are 100% biobased, while agave straws / sugarcane straws and PHA straws are 55% and 80% respectively. The remaining portion is made from from (you guessed it) fossil fuel additives...which is what plastic straws are made of! I know that's a-lot to absorb, but there is really no comparison from a sustainability standpoint. Hope that helps!

Just the stems of the wheat plant!

Q: do these straws bend in half without breaking? I am interested in using them for crafts

if you put them in water and let the straw absorb the liquid for a few minutes they won't break.
