An ugly duckling grows into a lethal swan...
"F-111 & EF-111 Units in Combat" is an Osprey Combat Aircraft series entry on the controversial but remarkable service life of the U.S. Air Force's groundbreaking fighter bomber. Author Peter Davies passes lightly over the F-111's troubled birth as a plane intended for use by the U.S. Air Force and Navy. His narrative properly begins as the F-111, still working through the teething pains of its unique swept-wing design and complicated electronics, is rushed into combat in Vietnam. The text methodically follows the F-111 through its participation in various Vietnam War operations, the El Dorado Canyon air strike on Libya, the air campaign against Iraq in Operation Desert Storm, and the F-111's afterlife as a highly effective electronic countermeasures aircraft. It is built around details on missions flown, changes in tactics, and upgrades in capabilities. The narrative is nicely braced up with lots of first person testimony from the pilots who flew the F-111. The author does not shy away from discussing the hazards of flying a complicated aircraft. The almost minute by minute breakdown of the Libya airstrike is revealing of the aircraft's performance under the extremely difficult conditions of a groundbreaking mission. The author wrote for an aviation-oriented audience; the general reader may find it a bit dense with jargon. The narrative is much enhanced by an excellent collection of photographs, illustrations, and maps. The result is a fascinating and evenhanded treatment of an exceptional aircraft that never quite got its due from its critics or the general public. Highly recommended.

Not what it seems
This is a good book, if not a little biased. However my major beef is that Amzon do not clearly advertise this as a print on demand book which is a little lower quality. Really Amazon is it so hard?
