The main mechanics seem sound and it winds smooth and feels strong, the drag handled me pulling in a a large ray. However the reel arrived with a decorative? rubber band around the barrel that has fallen off during shipping. The handle, made of hard foam fell off while winding in. Luckily I was able to fish it out of the water and push it back onto the handle. I will need to glue it on. Mixed feelings.

We have started the 10000 Series Sougayilang Spinning Reel evaluation and out of the box we are impressed with the build quality and the appearance of this well made reel. Nice feel in the hand and decent rotation, a little heavy but feels substantial. Not sure about the vented spool so will be using 20lb mono as backing with a double-uni knot to braid just incase. For a salt water reel under 100$ it stands out as a contender for budget minded people who want quality at a good price. We are taking to Mexico in February we will update the review after 2 weeks of surf fishing. Will be loading with 50lb braid and will be attached to a 12ft surf rod. Stay tuned.

Compared to a penn they are probably sized at about 7000 range. 10000 is a little oversized for what it really is. On most rigs the only difference between a 7000 - 10000 range is the spool capacity and the main frame is almost the same. This reel will work on anything from big cats and striper bass to good sized sharks. The drag is great with plenty of adjustment for the exact drag tension needed. At first glance you would expect it to be at least a 100 dollar reel. Now the difference between a Penn and this reel would be for example: Your rigs falls into the rocks off the peer and the penn gets bent up alittle, while this reel would be more apt to break compared to the penn body. When it comes to catching fish they will both fill the boat. If your a professional get the Penn. If you fish less than 50 times a year you will love this reel, and most pro's I believe would find it to be a nicer reel certainly better than the average wal-mart stuff.
