Good book for the reference lib
It's difficult to keep up with all the changes, impact, and new tools that Netweaver technology is requiring for configuring and maintaining the environments. I think that this book has merit in that it stick with some of the aspects and tasks that have not changed as much, and gives an update to some of the older information. For the $$ it is a good book.

Handbook
The SAP R/3 Handbook, The book handles well the concepts of the SAP R / 3 as well as current versions of Java, however the title a bit distracting as it is not a manual of SAP, but anyway this book that aims to understand the concepts of the R / 3 as well as of the JAVA in a general way, so I consider it a good book from the academic attempt of not speciality in some topic, but does not see it as a manual at all.Jorge Cervantes

Poor Book, barely skims the surface
This book provides no real usable knowledge about SAP. There is absolutely no information on some areas, such as CATT's. And the areas that have some meat have only bologna.

Good reference book.
It won't take you further unless you have some knowledge and access to SAP environments to play with. But that's not hard to get. So, the value of this book is really up to you. The knowledge is there. Very clear.
