A Very Handy knife that is Blunt & built for kids in mind!
One Very good Quality knife with full rust resistance that holds and retains it's edge lightweight in your pocket well designed and this knife has been in existence since the late 18th century. I've researched this knife company from France and it has a very long history of making quality knives and great quality made with care and you can be sure that it's money well spent. I bought this because it's blunt there's no Point on the blade but very sharp and it's identical to a common butter knife that you'll find in your utensil shelf and this knife has a locking mechanism on it so you can be sure that'll keep on opened and won't close on you while you're using it. One very well made knife is all I can say about this knife and I never thought that France has some quality knives they're selling under the radar!

Safe for first timers
These knives are great no got 15 of these for the scouts in my cubs out den. The rounded tip is nice for first time knife users to minimize injuries. Some of the kids initially had trouble with the locking mechanism but I think it’s better for younger kids than other mechanisms

Nice first knife
The one I received would be difficult to work for smaller children, the lock and hinge are both tight right out of the box. The blade is thin, and is a reasonable length. It came sharp, and looks easy enough to keep that way. I think it will make an excellent knife while we're out mushroom hunting, and looks well built. We should get a lot of use out of it. I bought the blue one for my youngest, after examining it for a minute or two my oldest requested one in orange.

Almost perfect kid's first knife
I bought this knife to teach my children responsible of of a knife and let them whittle their own sticks for marshmallows and hot dogs. Since I've never had an Opinel, I used it a bit first to get a feel for it. The design is nearly perfect, with only a couple minor caveats. Pros: * No sharp point * No spring, so less chance of it accidentally closing on your fingers * The locking ring allows you lock it both open and shut * It comes very sharp, which is better if you cut yourself. Clean cuts from sharp knives heal much faster than jagged cuts from dull knives * The spine is sharp enough to spark a ferro rod * The thin knife geometry and stainless steel is excellent for food work * The rounded tip allows for easier and safer use with techniques using two thumbs on the back of the blade Cons: * The locking ring can be difficult for young fingers, which means I will have to teach my younger one to handle it like a fixed blade at first * The end of the blade nearest to the locking ring needs a choil. I can see a child struggling with the ring and getting a cut or scrape on the corner of the blade. * The sharp spine can bug your thumb if you choke up when carving (remember, we're talking young fingers). You can fix if with a file, sandpaper, and/or a grinder if you wish. I like the ability to light a fire, so I bought my kids gloves. I would really like to see it come out of the box with a rounded spine * This is not a hard-core bushcraft knife, so it won't take abuse. Then again, kids should be taught to respect a pocket knife In conclusion, I really like this knife. The pros outweigh the cons, and the cons can be fixed by adult supervision. I definitely recommend this as a first knife!

Great first knife
This is an awesome first pocket knife! Although it has no fancy tools like a Swiss Army, it is very well built and I think the locking mechanism is both easy to use and secure enough for whittling. The rounded point also adds another safety component to it. An absolutely great option for a first pocket knife!

Very sharp
The knife is lighter in weight than I was expecting because I'm used to larger knives that are all metal. The body of this one is lighter weight wood (not flimsy, just light) and the blade is thin (again, not flimsy) so it won't drag your pocket down when you carry it. You could probably carry it in a shirt pocket, but you'd probably lose it that way. As advertised, there is no point -- it has a rounded end -- so it's not a stabby knife, it's a slicey knife, which is what it's designed for: cutting apples, oranges, sandwiches, etc. at a picnic, or the like. And as mentioned in the headline, the blade is very sharp (which is what you want in a knife), and I found that out on accident when washing it before using it. The locking mechanism is pretty simple: turn the locking ring to unlock it, pull the blade out, and turn the ring back to lock the blade open. I bought it to use as a non-scary looking pocket knife because it has no point on it and it will still cut things. It's also not too small or too large; just the right size for me.

Amazing kids knife - but be careful!
I'm biased to Opinel, growing up in Europe and knowing them for years. Super excited they are now available in the US. Opinel is famous for it's incredible sharpness - and this kid's knife is no exception. It's a pocket knife that will easily slice tomatoes! It's NOT a knife to mess around with. When he was young, my brother cut himself in the leg with an Opinel and his skin popped open like a sausage. Clean cut... but... you know :) it's not a knife to whittle with carelessly! SO, all this to say. The knife is amazing. It does have a rounded tip, so there is not a great stabbing danger. The blade locks perfectly with Opinel's twist mechanism. It's just... sharp as heck. Which is great for a knife - just be careful and supervise your kid.

My 8 year old granddaughter loves playing the famous five with her friends and she asked for a pocket knife for Christmas. I'd bought a small Swiss army knife for my son many years ago and he'd loved it but I couldn't find one this time, so I bought this one. It's advertised as "my first opinel" so assumed it would be fine. It is RAZOR-SHARP. On the packet it says not suitable for children but it didn't say anything like that on their site. It came from Germany, so it would be expensive to return.
