First one down two to go
I have dyslexia so reading is a major effort for me and not something I usually do for pleasure. However when I'm on holiday I do try to read something, because I have the time to put that effort in. Usually choose a classic novel because if the plot is sketchy and the book isn't well written I give up immediately. I wanted something modern this time so I asked a bookworm friend for recommendations and she suggested Becky Chambers. I trust my friend but she is into audio books these days so I decided to order the these three books. Because I'm not an habitual reader I maximise my experience by having a physical book in my hands and using a beautiful book mark. I have just finished the first book and I completely loved it. The book was well written (tick), the story was engaging and filled with thrills and feel good stuff (tick). There are lots of metaphors amongst the interstellar cast which made me contemplate our human obsession with differences and the stupidity of the resulting prejudices (tick). I am excited to start the next book in a couple of weeks time.

This is a lovely book
OK so this book has buckets of worldbuilding, characters both in diversity and depth as like- less then half you follow are human and the writing is *chefs kiss*. Its mature in a realistic way, sex and nudity especially concerning one of the species on the ship isnt special, or taboo it just is. No one give a sideway glance to the mech with two dads, or to a different mech that im 90% sure has dwarfism, and they are as respectful to the navigator with two people running the body, using plural pronouns and so on. They use Neopronouns seemlessly for species that dont fit into 2014 views of male and female. Theres no scene of anyone fighting over it, or excusing messing up the customs of anothers species. Humans are looked at realistically as violent little intelligent species which compared to other species mentioned in this book is very true!I keep the 5 star because I love the story but the shipping is something to long for. The softcover books are shrink wrapped together with no box or even a sleeve and one of the books I got was damaged with visible splash stains of a brown liquid which paired with the shrink wrap kind of damaged the book. I wont be returning any of them and that isnt due to amazon or the company but because I only noticed it after getting part way through the first book and I doggy ear them so I didnt want to run the chance of sending them back and not getting a refund due to the un fixable doggy earing damage.

Wonderful gift!
One of my favorite book series of recent years. I bought this set for my daughter for Christmas (along with the two more recent books in the same series).

The future in Space is deadly serious but hopeful
I find Becky's writing has this lovely aftertaste of Hopefulness.

Great series, but beware:)
I started the series reading the first one (duh) and I really liked it. I liked the world that was built, the different types of aliens, the characters on the ship, the dynamic between everyone. I also enjoyed the ending. A few months and a few books passed and I started reading the second one and was initially dissapointed. Why, you ask? Well I suppose it is my fault, but I started the second book ( a closed and common orbit) with the thought that it would be a continuation of the first one, or at least "season two" of the same thing. what I got was more of a spin off, or an anthology of sorts. It took me a while to come to terms with the fact that I wont be getting the same characters from the previous book, but once I did, it started rolling. I still feel like the first one of the series was better and more complete, but the second book was enjoyable, feel good and pretty straight forward. Becky Chambers leaves us "some" work to do by ourselves regarding jumps in the story and certain developments that she doesn't explain, but lets us fill in the gap in a nice way.Now all that is left is book three, here we come:)
