Sehr zufrieden

A handmade leather swatter made in Germany? Perfect.
Nearly $30 for a “fly swatter” - better be an awesome fly swatter. And indeed, this item fits the bill. There were some jokes in my household before the item arrived about whether or not an expensive wooden and leather quality crafted fly swatter might be an item intended for a certain variety “adult games”, if you will. I, myself, began questioning if I could’ve been so foolish. As my family members greatly enjoyed poking fun at my potential obliviousness, my confidence began to erode. Further reinforced when I revisited the item and perused the “Customers who viewed this item also viewed...” and found some dubious related items. Finally, I receive the notification that it’s arrived and dash downstairs to retrieve the box off the porch. Everyone in my house and my brother’s partner stood around the island in my kitchen laughing at anxious anticipation to unbox this thing. I return from the front door package in hand, toss it onto the granite countertop to give the spectators a clear view as this 48 hour saga of humility finally reaches its climax. As always, I pull out my pocket knife - slice the tape at one end, spin the box and repeat, then shift the angle and slice the tape down the center. For a moment there’s dead silence, everyone’s gaze affixed upon my unboxing ritual. As I pull up the flaps of cardboard the strings I missed in the tape snap with unusually satisfactory tone. Inside lies some brown paper and through it I see the full sheen of plastic sheathing my brand new...fly swatter!!! HA HA!! You lose. Good day sir!Wow what a relief. It became immediately apparent that this was nothing more than an opulent swatter of winged insects. A very nice untreated but silky smooth wooden handle, with a hold at the base that has a leather lace strung through it for hanging on a hook, and *very* healthy serving of raw hide on the business end. And boy, does she mean business! In all the commotion caused by my family turning this into a joke at my expense I hadn’t spent much time considering how this would work, assuming it was actually a fly swatter. Now it’s in my hands and I realize I hadn’t pondered how it would perform against my flying foe. Instinct took over and I whacked the shipping box. The “thwap” was music to my ears. Virtually no decay on the sound. Very little vibration through the handle. Meaning most of the energy is transferring into the target. I lifted the swatter and the cardboard had a hole in it where the handle had hit. Two things were taken from this:1.) This is most definitely not a toy, it would leave serious welts and bruising if you struck a person with this.2.) There is a learning curve to this beautiful beast.Because the leather flap at the end is soft/limp, it works best if you use it with mechanics of a whip as opposed to a normal pleb fly swatter. I suppose I had developed a habit, probably out of fear that certain exoskeletal aggressors like wasps may survive a strike from a wire fly swatter, of not only swatting but then grinding the pinned critter into the object it was stuck against. This approach has many downsides to it, such as making a mess or being less effective on softer surfaces. This leather fly swatter does not suffer these drawbacks and after further experimenting I have found the best technique is to use it like a whip. What I mean is that the leather, and not the handle (at least in my four or five weeks with her) is sufficient to decimate anything you might be facing. So by giving a little flick of the wrist at the end of your swing you prevent the handle from contacting the surface (which it will damage if it’s plaster or dry wall...or your brother’s leg that you hit to kill a mosquito for him to get back at him and remind him that you will always be superior to him...or any other hypothetical surface). Seriously it can dent stuff, it’s like a drumstick. Or a wooden spoon but with a leather flap.In summary, this is expensive. But so is any machine capable of inter-dimensional travel. And any insect you hit will be sent into the 2nd dimension. I’ve killed multiple insects after striking them in mid-air and watched them fly across the room and hit the walls and fall to the baseboard dead as a door nail. I’ve flattened house centipedes to the degree that NOT A SINGLD LEG WAS LEFT MOVING and you *know* how difficult that can be.I can’t say this is a justifiable expense for all, however, I can say without hesitation that it has brought me an unforeseen amount of pleasure both in practical use and as a topic of discussion and humor. And I would 100% purchase it again and recommend it to any and all who are able to spend ~$30 on a fly swatter. You could literally kill a small mammal with this thing.Wow I got carried away telling that story!! Hope this helps out the very few people who read it haha.I’ve named her Gertrude. An amalgamation of German, and rude/intrusive owing to the nature in which she interrupts and abruptly ends the lives of pests.Happy swatting!
