One of my favorites
I use a fine tip pilot metropolitan, and the ink comes out about as dark as pencil lead. It's a runny ink, though, and creates a wider line than a dry ink would. It doesn't write on cheap paper very well. Still, it's a nice, soft gray with a very slight hint of lavender. It flows quickly, so you go through it faster than drier inks.

Decent, at best
It can be reluctant to come out but seems to have a watery clumping effect. It didn't go down smoothly, looks blotchy. Is more of a light grey than little to no bluish tint. I was hoping for a bluish grey, that's not what this is.

Waterproof Grey ink - but has a purple tint. Mixed in some yellow...
I like the permanence of this 'Gris Nisage' gray ink by J.Herbin - but deducted 1 star because of the purple tint.To make this ink into a gray that I like I created this color recipe: I mixed 6 drops of J.Herbin 'Amber de... B' (yellow-ish ink) with 3 eye-dropper fulls of the 'Gris'.Success! I now have the waterproof grey ink color I want.I'm using both grey colors in 2 Jinhao 922 fountain pens I bought in the same order. A match made in heaven! There was barely enough packaging to keep everything from breaking - but they survived the shipping process.

Best for small handwriting and details
I purchased this ink because of two factors: one, because I loved the color I saw in several swatches of this product, and two, because I liked my experience with a sample of another ink by J. Herbin. Naturally, I was disappointed when my first attempt at using the ink with a Platinum Preppy 03 nib resulted in borderline invisible text, since all the swatches I’d seen were perfectly legible. However, as I proceeded to use the ink to take notes, I realized something: the smaller your handwriting is, the better and darker this ink becomes. All of the gorgeous color variation I’d seen in reviews of this color suddenly appeared once I reduced the size of my handwriting.I think you can achieve a similar effect if you write or draw much more slowly. However, for note-taking purposes, I prefer a smaller text size for better speed!

Another superb color by J Herbin and the best red out there!
Such a beautiful color.. of all the reds that are out there, this one is really a brilliant color, very vibrant and bold. As with all the colors by J Herbin, I recently purchased this ink to use with my fountain pens, and it goes wonderfully with my Pelikan M600 Pink special edition fountain pen. Once you buy a bottle of J herbin ink, you want to add a few more colors to your collection. My other favorites that I own are : vert pre (superb green, mix it with some blue and see the teal you create), bleu pervenche, (medium blue, not too light nor too dark) violette pensee, (you gotta have a violet), rose tendresse (on sale at the goulet pen company when I bought it, very sweet pink) and the best is cyclamen (this is a must have!).

Great ink... color is just useless to me
I bought this ink wanting a sketching ink for a fine fountain pen, but it's a bit too light, and doesn't shade quite as well as I'd read in reviews, I love J. Herbin... but I'm having a hard time finding a use for this ink. My first less-than-stellar experience with the company in 15 years, so don't let it sway you from the line... others might find it more useful than I did, which is why I've given it 4 stars. It's great ink, just like all of J.H.'s products, but I just don't know what you'd do with a gray this light... maybe good for artists that use 2 fountain pens, for shading?

beautiful ink, slight lavender cast
I love Herbin inks and this one does not disappoint. The ink color does have a bit of a lavender cast in certain light. I find it pleasant. There are many ways to create gray and this is one of them!

Not burgundy, I think.
Good enough and as fountain pen ink unexceptionable, but something seems to have gone awry in translation: this tint isn't burgundy, at least to my eye. It's on the violet side of red. Rouge bourgogne is available in bottles but not, it appears, in cartridges. There's the rub.

inchiostro intrigante
