A great KM Peyton book, of course. But -noooo! With was supposed to end up with Peter McNair, and she was supposed to have a pony job!! why did you do this to me KM Peyton! Fly by Night was my favourite pony book as a child - as an adult i discovered the sequel 'The Team' and was so happy with it.Great books of course - this set of 3 - and i enjoyed reading a lot - just nooooooo! And what happened to Toadhill Flax??! hahahaha

An old favourite
A little dated, but still as interesting, readable and infuriating as it was thirty years ago. You really care about the characters, and you want life to be more easy for them, even though you know that life with Patrick will always be full of problems!

Pennington finds love
Ruth Hollis, the pony mad heroine of Fly-by-Night, has a new passion in her life, the baker's boy, who just happens to be Patrick Pennington from Pennington's Seventeenth Summer. We are given a vivid impression of how strong Ruth's feelings are from the first page, where Ruth's older brother Ted observes Ruth mowing the lawn and remarks on this unusual fact to his mother, who explains:'She mows it regularly at about one o'clock every afternoon, when the bread's due.''it must be getting pretty bare by now.''It is.''Does he stop and tell her how lovely it looks?''As far as I know he doesn't even notice she's there. It's unrequited, this passion of hers.'But Ruth is a tenacious person, and at last she does get Penn to notice her. The beginnings of her tentative relationship with the difficult, moody Penn are vividly described, no author has ever been able to conjure up the joys and pains of first love better than K.M. Peyton does here. I admit I did feel the occasional pang of regret that Ruth has abandoned ponies for boys, but life is like that. An absorbing story with characters who seem very real. Most novels for teenagers about first love seem very bland compared to this one.

2nd time
Bought it for my daughter and read it for a 2nd time after 20 years. Still as good as I remembered.
