The more convenient, higher quality technical pen from Rotring
If you’re looking at this as a way to upgrade from the Microns, you’ve picked the right pen. Rotring offers two technical pens – the Isograph and the Rapidograph. AKA, the awesome pen and the stinking pile of why.The Isograph is the one that refills with Rapidograph ink bottles. The Rapidograph, which does not take Rapidograph ink bottle refills, uses cartridges. The primary advantage of a cartridge over bottle filling in any other pen is the convenience of changing cartridges on the go. These are such a pain to try to take off, you really can’t just pop a new one in while sitting on a bus or whatever. What you can do is top off the Isograph’s ink supply before you leave, or refill the Isograph from the bottle, as that is neat and super easy. You drip the ink into the wide-mouth bladder from a needle tip applicator on the bottle.Beyond the refill system, both pens behave the same and are common considered the best on the market (rightfully so). They lay down a smooth, clean line. They are precise, don’t leak, don’t give trouble, and work brilliantly.About the only problem I’ve had with this is if I have it open for any length of time without using it (and here I mean two or three minutes) I have to close it and shake it to get the ink to flow again. But once I do, it’s fine, so I certainly can’t ding it a star for that.Overall, while I still like the variety of colors I can have at hand all at once with the Microns, I love the smoothness and clean lines this pen can create. The 0.5 is a substantial line from a technical pen and I absolutely adore it.

Getting skipping on excellent quality journal paper
I really want to love this pen. I've heard such good things about it, and actually have a .35 and a .5 Rotring Isograph that I love. Like the others, this one is easy to fill and clean. When the ink is flowing well through this pen it is an absolute joy. Today I'm using this particular pen on a Stillman and Birn Beta Series 140# watercolor paper journal. This is a smooth paper, no texture to speak of. The pen will do fine for a while, but then cuts out and leaves a groove on the paper with no ink. The ink begins to flow again as soon as I hold the tip to a paper towel and give it a shake, but the point of "drawing the breath" is that the lines are unbroken. I'm not pressing hard, and I am using the pen very consistently and smoothly. I expecct the slight groove from the tip dragging a bit along the surface, but ordinarily don't see the groove because it immediately fills with ink. I say this because I'm using this set-up to do mindful penwork, which is long, smooth, unbroken lines. I'm using the ink that came with the pen, so there shouldn't be issues with compatability. I will continue using the pen on a variety of other papers and see if the problem is only on this one partiular surface. Never had a problem using any other pens on these notebook journals.

Not up to Koh-I-Noor standards
I ordered this Rotring Isograph .50mm pen on March 19, 2022 hoping it would become a lower cost alternative to the Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph technical fountain pens that I’ve been using for the last 60 years. The pen works well when filled with India Ink, exhibiting consistent line and ink flow, but after three weeks of use, the cap would no longer engage the body threads and could not be kept in place. This condition leads to India Ink drying within the tip. This is serious malfunction. I have managed to thoroughly clean the pen with a vibratory cleaner, but in the process found that (unlike the equivalent Koh-I-Noor product), the inability to completely disassemble the working parts of tip, cleaning wire & weight, and retaining basket… to make a thorough cleaning, is another negative design flaw of this pen. A very minor inconvenience is that the cap, when removed, does not easily fit over the end of the barrel when the pen is in use, thus loosing this convenient “parking” spot.

Overall good pen
I am by no means a pen expert, but this pen does perform really well. It is plastic, but it doesn’t feel very cheap. The ink flows very smoothly. If you haven’t used the pen for a few days you may need to suck on the tip or dunk it in water to get the ink flowing but it never stops in the middle of use. The only thing is that the pen doesn’t write at as many angles as some others do because of the style of the nib.(Ps. I’m sorry for the weird environment the picture were taken in. My desk is an absolute disaster so I had to take one of the pictures on the floor and another on a book I’m reading. I did buy this pen from a third party vendor, so your packaging may be different. The packaging this came in was excellent and protected the pen very well.)

Not good for writing
I was looking for a writing pen to substitute for pen & ink. This is really for technical work - It has to be held exactly vertical to get the ink to flow evenly. Line was also bolder than I expected. An annoyance is that the cap doesn't fit on the other end of the pen - Very easy to lose track of.

rOtring Isograph Pens Are So Long-Lasting!
Crazy about how time flies using the rOtring Isograph Technical Pen. The work I do looks expert and I could go on with it for hours. Love this super-flawless pen!

Big beautiful consistent lines, as expected.
Need a big fat juicy line? The .5mm is the one for the job. It works quite nicely and is a lot smoother than the .13mm. I am not surprised by this and both facts are alright with me.

Best technical pen
Best technical pen on the market today. It seems all manufacturers have allowed a slow decline in quality over the years, but rotring still comes out on top.

Reliable. ink flow joy. Refillable and sustainable. Zero waste.
This is a great pen.It draws smoothly and reliably. Takes India Ink which is waterproof and permanent. Way cheaper and sustainable to use a refillable pen than keep buying disposable pens. I bought a 250ml bottle of ink; way cheaper than the tiny ones. The steel nib will last forever. I use it most days. But if I leave it for a while, a good shake and the ink flows like a dream. I had been using cheaper brands, which were fine for a while, and then clogged and stopped working, even after extensive cleaning and faffing about. Grrr factor 10/10 after several months of use. As an artist and not a technical draughtsperson, I really rate these pens. Mine is a 0.6 nib. Can't vouch for the reliability of the finer nibs. However, it is too easy to over-tighten the grey nib holding section against the handle / barrel. Mine has a hairline crack, allowing the barrel to rotate a bit and be annoying. But it does not affect the drawing function, or ink flow, just the handling of the barrel. Still useable, but would like a better quality plastic at that point in the design. I have not been heavy handed with it. It was just a bit weak there on the thread.Having said which, it is far superior to the cheaper brands. I wasted money buying several cheapos, thinking I had simply bought a rogue pen initially. Not so. The working parts were just not as good as Rotring. Invest in the best.

Deserves 5 Stars Actually (PLEASE READ ⬇️)
I'm rating 1 star to the company ROTRING, not the actual product. The product deserves 5 Stars as it delivers everything you expect from a fineliner pen. It's dark pigmented, smooth, smudge free & spill proof. But when you spend about 1K on just a pen, you expect it to last a couple of years. Which is something which didn't happen with me. My pens died out of blockage just after a year. I tried cleaning them up but nothing happened.I'm clearly not that prodigal to buy a pen worth of 1k just to throw it away a year after. So this is officially my last purchase from Rotring.I've switched to sakura fineliners & they are amazing beyond words.
