Brilliant Travel Guide
This book is small but mighty - it's not big but It's 400 pages long! The front cover opens out to reveal a handy map showing the regions and main cities and towns of Portugal, with page reference numbers to quickly go to a region within the guide. The back cover flap features a useful reference to icons and map symbols used throughout the book. Inside the back cover, it opens to reveal a map of Portugal with a handy guide to distances between key places. The main book is well set out with fabulous photographs throughout. It's split in to 3 main chapters:(1) DISCOVER - this chapter is around 40 pages and includes a general introduction to Portugal, suggested 7 day itinerary, and several double-page spreads flagging up things to see or do depending on your personal tastes (e.g. Portugal for art lovers, Portugal for foodies, Portugal for photographers, Portugal for beach lovers etc). There's also an interesting 6-page section giving a brief history of Portugal from 2000BC to date.(2) EXPERIENCE - this chapter is over 300 pages and is split into 5 sub-chapters for these areas of Portugal: Lisbon, Northern Portugal, Central Portugal, Southern Portugal and Portugal's Islands. Each area is split into smaller sections for the main districts, cities or islands as relevant. These pages are full of very useful information, advice and tips. There are detailed maps, suggested itineraries, recommended places to eat and drink, short walk guides, insightful facts, information about places to stay and of course things to see and do. It's hard to do it justice here, but I really enjoyed flacking through the book rather than scrolling websites.(3) NEED TO KNOW - around 20 pages of essential information and an index. This includes really useful tips about laws and general way of life stuff in Portugal.Overall, highly recommended!

Ok for overall view of place to look into
It's a very general overview and doesn't give recommendations on many things to each in each area. The coverage of the algarve is very small so I'd recommend getting a specific guide of the algarve if interested in there

Fall in love with Portugal
You can't really go wrong with DK, they pretty much wrote the book on books that are easy on the eye and this is no exception. You will be inspired, you will visualise yourself in Portugal, you will almost certainly learn things you didn't know about this historic European country. If there is one caveat, it's that travel books are caught in a pincer movement between e-books and the internet- which promises to delve deeper into Portugal than a book of this sort can. What you get here is an overview of the region as a whole and the various delights it has to offer with a bit of DK magic sprinkled over it- namely cut through and birds eye pictures of pretty buildings and districts. It's probably about as good as a book its size can be - it covers everything from cuisine, to places to stay and practical travel info and it's a sensible alternative to an ipad if you want to take it with you on a day out or hike and not have to worry too much about losing it.

Great book, perfect for planning your next holiday
I really like using DK Eyewitness books when planning my holidays and I always use DK guides in the planning stages as I think that they point you in the right direction of what to see and do. This is a DK Eyewitness book about Portugal. DK books are fantastic for holiday planning in any country. They are so useful and are packed with pictures, maps and information. The front cover is a pull out map of Portugal. This book includes a general introduction to Portugal and its history. It is split into sections about Lisbon, Central Portugal, Northern Portugal, Southern Portugal and its islands. It includes places to visit, where to stay, where to eat and drink and where to shop. In the back there is another fold out map too. This book is a great size to take away with you, packed with so much information, pictures and ideas. It is a good overall guide, which will point you in the right direction of places to visit. I usually use a guide like this to get ideas then research things on the internet. Great little guide perfect for planning your next holiday at a reasonable price.
