ADF FUNCTION ON/Off Functions To activate the 3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet Series 100, press the ON/SHADE button. The welding fi lter automatically turns OFF after 1 hour of inactivity. The welding fi lter has two photo sensors (Fig. 5) that react independently and cause the fi lter to darken when a welding arc is struck. The welding fi lter may not go to the dark state if the sensors are blocked or the welding arc is totally shielded. Flashing light sources (e.g. safety strobe lights) can trigger the welding fi lter making it fl ash when no welding is occurring. This interference can occur from long distances and/or from refl ected light. Welding areas must be shielded from such interference. Dark Shade Selection Models 3M™ Speedglas™ Auto-Darkening Filter 100S-10 and 3M™ Speedglas™ Auto-Darkening Filter 100S-11 have a fi xed, single dark shade where no setting is required. Model 3M™ Speedglas™ Auto-Darkening Filter 100V has fi ve different dark shade numbers that can be selected: 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12. Check with the Shade Guide (Table 1) to determine the proper dark shade setting for your application. In order to see which shade the welding fi lter is currently set to, momentarily press the shade button and observe the fl ashing LED. To select another shade, keep pressing the shade button while the LED is fl ashing until the LED indicates the desired setting. Sensitivity Selection (100V) The photo-sensor system detects the welding arc and triggers the ADF to switch to the dark state. The sensors are designed to respond to welding arcs and not to normal ambient lighting or sunlight. To change the sensitivity setting, press the “Sens” button repeatedly until the LED indicates the desired setting. Position 1 Low sensitivity - for welding in groups Position 2 Normal sensitivity - for typical SMAW and MIG welding indoors and outdoors Position 3 High sensitivity - for stable arcs (e.g. TIG welding) Position 4 Grinding mode (light green rectangle) – for use in grinding applications to lock the lens into shade 3 Delay (100V) The delay function should be used to set the recovery delay time of the welding fi lter from the dark to light state according to the welding application and current. See table below for shade setting and corresponding delay time. Position “-” - shortens delay time opening Position “+” - lengthens delay time opening Shade – (ms) + (ms) 8 40 100 9 60 100 10 60 150 11 100 200 12 100 250 Finding the right sensitivity setting In order to fi nd a suitable sensitivity setting, start with setting 2. This is the correct setting for most applications. If the fi lter does not darken reliably while welding, change to setting 3. If the sensitivity is set too high, the fi lter might switch to the dark state in response to ambient lighting. If the ADF is being used in close proximity to other welding arcs, it may be necessary to switch to Position 1 to avoid interference or “false triggering.”
