Written by the most qualified in the business with AMAZING art to accompany... A must-have for comic lovers and those curious about Marvel history.Mark Waid is someone who is a veritable encyclopedia of comic book knowledge... Add to that the fact that he's an amazing writer and you have someone singularly qualified to write the History of the Marvel Universe. He has managed to weave together all of the various storylines and retcons from the last 80 years(!!!) in one six-issue mini-series, compiled into this beautiful treasury edition with GORGEOUS artwork. People (readers) over the years might complain about the convoluted Marvel history, but they've always strived to do things that make sense - add new history that takes place in logical gaps in timelines., alter history with someone traveling through time, show what happened a million years ago (recent things), what happens in the far future, etc... DC is more about constant reboots. I'm not judging - they just have different tactics. What Mark Waid does here is explain everything in a line from the beginning to the end of time, nodding to many of the events that have been added through time - Wolverine's origins, different added Avengers teams before the "first" Avengers (Iron Man, Thor, etc), even going back to 1M BC and the origins of things like the Phoenix Force, Odin, and such, which were introduced more recently in the pages of the Avengers.Regardless, very worth the read. It's a shortened, modern, narrative take on Marvel Saga that is executed WELL and the annotations at the back of the book are GREAT. Paragraphs of historical details and references to which issues everything comes from (what books to check for the first appearances of this and that). Gold.Did I mention how good the art is? :)

Beautiful Telling of the History of the 616 -- With a Few Omissions
Waid, Rodriguez, and Lopez produce a lush telling of the Marvel Universe of Earth 616 (the main Marvel continuity. And the tabloid format is the PERFECT way to enjoy this story. To me Waid is second only to the late Mark Grunwald in his vice gripe like knowledge of Marvel history and it is on display in this work.Set within a framing sequence of a conversation between Galactus and Franklin Richards, Waid reaches back to Marvel pre-history, through it's primary heroic ages and into the deep future to set up an enjoyable story. Yes it is "just" a history, and yes many of these details you already know, but the story is told in a compelling way that you enjoy each and every turn of the page. For my own sake, there were a few spots that got overlooked:* Peter's marriage to MJ got no mention at all, and to me it was a seminal part of my childhood enjoyment of Marvel comics. Of course, since One More Day the marriage was erased (and the less said about that story line the better) the marriage no longer exists and Waid and Rodriguez are telling the tale of what is in canon. I understand this, but I am still bummed about it.* The Evolutionary War was more of a footnote in the universe, but it was a personal favourite of mine and I was hoping it might get at least a passing reference.* The Professor Hulk story line (especially his time with the Pantheon). But if these are my only gripes with their sweeping tale of the 616, then you know they did a good jobThe upshot is that if you have any interest in the history of the Marvel universe you owe it to yourself to not only buy this series, but to pick it up in this format.

Snapshots of the Some of the Greatest Moments in Marvel's Long History (Review #529)
I've not really enjoyed most of anything Mark Waid has ever written but I couldn't avoid a series like this because of that forever. As another reviewer has said as well, I can't think of anyone better qualified to write it, except maybe Kurt Busiek considering what he accomplished in Avengers: Forever (1998). As far as the book goes it is a valiant effort for what it tries to accomplish but not a perfect one. It would have been impossible to do every moment in Marvel's long history justice without making the series go to fifty issues or more but even given that I found a number of events to be shortchanged or simply overlooked. There are a number of helpful annotation pages at the back that do elaborate further on these moments and give reading references. There is no real narrative beyond a rather interesting framing device involving Franklin Richards, Galactus, and the end of the universe. The writing isn't so much important as the art and Javier Rodriguez does a more or less perfect job. His faces can look weird at times but the way he meshes together these various moments of Marvel history is fantastic. Despite some small hurdles this is not a series fans should skip.4/5

Great story in a great over-sized format
I love this book! The story spans the entirety of the Marvel Universe as told by Galactus to Franklin Richards at the end of time. Through their conversation we are given glimpses into the past & witness a thorough recap of the major points in Marvel History. Great stuff by Mark Waid and company. Highly Recommended! A+

History, Marvel style
The series itself was a great look at the decades worth of comics history that encompasses the Marvel Universe. Great art and the back matter is excellent at letting people know where they can find the issues the stories come from. The book collection comes in is pretty tall so you may want to put on a top shelf

You see the timeline through the past to the present and to the alternate future
Gives you details of the past and certain moments you don't know. Also shows Franklin Richards and Galactus talk about the universe timeline since it was about to when since they are in the future.
